See pics for rust. It won't wipe off with brake cleaner. I also can't get the pistons to compress by hand enough to put in the new pads. I thought that may be due to this corrosion, but read that it's normal and you need to use a tool or large pliers. But is this level or rust normal? If you were me would you buy new pistons? Thank you!

That's pretty typical. Especially in areas with salty winter roads. The surface of the piston which contacts the pad looks fine. If it ever looks worn, pitted, cracked, or is polished smooth from abrasion with the pad, then I would replace.

The part that counts is on the inside.

Belay the grease inside. It will get warm with use and drip/run out, potentially getting on the brake rotor which is the very, very last place that you want grease.

Unless you're having brake function problems I would not worry about that rust. It will not affect the function.
