To Buy A Turd or Not...That is The Question

In the bargain- for- money department, a decent truck with a blown engine or trans is usually a really good deal. It's not going to sell for much, and you'll get a big project, yet won't have to go through the entire truck spending money everywhere.
A total turd is always a big loss- you put $20k into a $1500 mess and get an $8k truck. Blown trans, you buy for $2500, put in 5k (figuring you'd do the transfer, front axles, yadda yadda) and get an 8k truck.

And yes, the least rusty is the best deal, always...

Well, I'm usually a cheap bastard, but it seems pretty clear that $2000 for an FJ62 means way too much rust or mileage for what its worth. Based on what I've been reading here and in other threads, I'm shooting for $3-5K and will hope for a bluebird along the way.

That one up on Cape Cod looks damn good to me, not to mention an easy road trip. If only the seller responded to, oh, any of my requests for info.

That Texas one looks good for the price. Although... Texas... *shifty eyes*
No in all honesty it'd be one heck of a road trip, and if you do it right you could eat delicious BBQ the whole way home. Do Texas, then Memphis, Then a slight detour to the Carolinas... seems legit. :)

CO, what rig in Texas? I'm not opposed to going that far or driving back on I-40. Done that drive from TN all the way to CA before and would to hit BBQ joints along the way, but I didn't see an FJ62 listing down that way. Did I miss something?

Any of you ever use this InspectMyRide service? I don't know anyone that could take a look at this truck up in MA, so figured I might give this a shot instead. About $150 for a basic inspection, seems like they send someone out to start the vehicle, drive it a bit, and take photos prior to you buying it. Just curious if anyone's ever given it a shot, forum searching didn't come up with squat.

Just come pick this one up in Long Beach. It's been listed for a while. Actually doesn't look TOO bad. It'll give you a nice project...

Way too much 'surf board' rust along the rain gutters on that truck.

It's extremely unlikely to find a low rust Cruiser in Mass. It only takes one winter drive in the salt to ruin a car up here. Keep up your search in the Southwest and consider the transportation expense as part of the cost.

Thanks for the advice. Makes a lot of sense, but I wonder what happens when I bring it back east. What might not start out as rust problem most certainly will develop into one. This past winter was a bonanza of road salt and I am sure it will continue in these parts. I've been doing a lot of reading and rust protection posts in this forum and looks like it is a manageable issue with proactive work.

I just bought one in cali for 1500, nice body no rust. Came without a front axle, owner says it was sitting for 5 years. He says the tranny slips a bit so looks like a perfect candidate for a 5 speed :) oh how i love 5 speed 62s.
Look for deals in cali if possible because the rust factor is really low around here, unless its been in a swamp for a couple years lol XD

My latest target - http://www.ebay.com/itm/251491592377?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649.

There is a nice rust free 62 in Tuscon too, but my better half greatly prefers this color over the tans and browns. I'm thinking of flying out to AZ and hauling ass to get it back home. Anyone have thoughts on this truck? Does the rust in that one pic, near the window, seem like a big issue? It looks to me like something I can handle fairly easily based on how it looks.

That seems to be a nice a looking cruiser! the rust around the front is common but minimal. Mileage is somewhat low. interior is rather clean.
