I bought a $100 WinBook tablet (running Win8.1) a year or so ago as a dedicated TIS device - it sites in my center console with the TIS cable. Works perfectly!

Was able to diagnose an electrical gremlin on a road trip early last year:

I'm about to pull the trigger on this. What version of Techstream are you using? Are you paying for it? Or using instruction listed around the Internet? I'm not really thinking the price they are asking is really worth it.

You can do what I did. Bought a bulk pc from online (I'm assuming it's an old school laptop or work laptop), already running Windows 7 and paid $50. Then bought the mvci cable and software from aliexpress for $35. Boom, full cheap Techstream setup. Yeah it's not as portable, but I couldn't get it running on my surface pro.

I've got an old 32bit laptop. And the cable I got off of Amazon came with a few different versions of the Techstream software. I guess I need to just go one by one installing the software and seeing if it will contest to the truck.

I'd have to fire it up to look at it and it lives in the truck, but IIRC I'm running 7.3.x or similar. As long as the Techstream version covers your truck, you don't need to run a newer version. I used the instructions on the internet (from the Tacoma website). This solution is perfect, actually - I store the cable and the tablet in the middle section of the center console and it takes less than a minute to pull them out, hook everything up, and get the tablet turned on.

Read through this thread, and a few others to determine the right cable and software to run. Still there seems to be various cables being used and different drivers on different software platforms. Getting agreement on the right set up would be helpful. I think this thread gets close to solving the mystery, and would be a good add to the FAQ since nothing resides there specific to the diagnostic tools.

Is there 1 Mini VCI that is proven to work that is backwards compatible on all 100's, as well as a definitive driver to use on windows or Mac OS?

I have mine installed on an old XP laptop.
Works perfectly.
