Just recently I've noticed a squeal sound from what appears to be the rear tires on my 2000 UZJ100. Usually it only occurs in a parking lot going under 20mph.

The tires are Michelin LTX M/S (275/70 R16) and have approx 0.25" tread remaining. The tire pressure is checked frequently and run according to the manual. I know I need to get some REAL tires on this beast, but are there any other guess to what this may be caused by?

Is it anything like the squeal when your brake pads are low?

If you're talking about a parking garage (smooth concrete), I've noticed tire squeal in just about all vehicles with varying tires, just a characteristic of the slippery concrete IMHO. Otherwise, maybe you got too much powa' :D

check the shims for the rear brake pads......mine was hitting the hub and made a funky noise....

What Tire pressures are you using? Sometimes the manufacturers recommendations are not always suitable as they assume a stock standard vehicle without passengers.

This squeal you describe is usually caused by slightly under inflated tyres as the tires wear out, particularly if the pressures throughout their life have been wrong and the wear pattern is not even.

Your symptoms are very common. I usually find as I drive in an underground parking lot a couple of times a week, when my tyres start to squeal on the smooth concrete, that's my indication to rotate the tires as the tread at the front is becoming un-even, in particular the passenger side from camber wear.

Nothing to worry about though.

Incidentally, just so that you know my background, I worked for a while for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co, and spent some time in their Research & Development laboratory. Very interesting learning.

Most of us modify our vehicles and even as much as adding a bullbar on the front, can alter what pressures you should be driving your vehicle at. They also assume full tanks of Gas, which is a lot of weight, so as some people only put in a small amount of fuel regularly, this also has a bearing on the pressures you should regularly use.

Sounds a bit over the top, though a full tank of gas can add a considerable amount of weight to the vehicle.....

Just a thought.

I'm positive it is not the "parking garage smooth concrete syndrom", I'm very familiar with that, espacially after cleaning your tires.

The tires make the squeal on rough asphalt as well, it only concerns me that the traction control feature may not be working correctly. Shouldn't it detect wheel slippage and become active for a second?

I will play around with tire pressures as suggested. I'm running the recommended tire pressure as stated in the manual and the vehicle is stock (no extra heavy equipment mounted YET. It is hard to recreate the problem as it isn't very frequent. It goes away long enough for you to forget about it.... :grinpimp:

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Don't worry about your TRAC system. It's not supposed to kick in on a small amount of slippage like that. All is well.

Now....UNLOCK that center diff lock on the pavement :D

If that's the case, then it definitely sounds like wind-up!

Sounds to me, as Shotts has suggested that the centre diff lock is engaged.

I know that it's impossible not to notice that big light on the dash, though maybe you should just check if that is the problem and the dash light is blown....

Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

I was just kidding. I'm sure he knows about that. :)

Lol,

I'm sure he does, though you never know...stuff like that happens sometimes.

Oh yes. Sure does. Like me, locking the lockers though they don't engage. I wait and wait. WHAT'S UP? Oh crap.....I forgot to lock my center diff. :grinpimp:

Shotts, you're talking about your 80, right?

"Now....UNLOCK that center diff lock on the pavement "

Ha Ha, I wish that was the problem. I've never driven on pavement with the center locked! I drill it into my wife's head too, never hit this button when off the trails.

I installed the CDL in my 80 and ususally forget to turn it on when wheeling, then realize I am slipping cuz I'm not locked! Hee Hee
