I hit something on the freeway yesterday that blew out the sidewall on one of my tires. I've only got about 12,000 miles on these new tires and I don't want to buy all new tires just because one blew out. I've heard you can get a new tire shaved down to match the existing wear on your other tires. Has anyone here done that before? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Same experience. Tire rack offers the service if you purchase a new tire, but the tire no longer has a warranty.

No need to worry. GX does not have viscous coupling in the drivetrain. Even new Subaru does not have viscous coupling anymore and more tolerant to tire size difference.

I agree that it's probably not needed. If you are concerned, measure the tread depth of the old tire relative to the spec for a new one and calculate the difference in circumference between the old tire and a new tire. If it's less than 1/4" or so, I wouldn't worry about it at all, since (as mentioned above), the GX has a sophisticated AWD system that can allow for differences in wheel speed/torque between the front and rear axle (and the open diffs allow it for side-to-side).

What's the tread depth difference? With only 12k on your tires, it shouldn't be an issue slapping a new tire on, unless you're really hard on tires.

OK, I just measured my tread depth and it's 10/32.
The tire brand new is 11/32.

So what does the hive mind think?

Thats really good to run it. Upto 4/32 overall difference between front and rear.
