Looks like we're getting another GX, fly&drive operation set for next week.

Can I get a tire recommendation in case something happens on the road home and I need to get tires?

The truck will live in Baton Rouge (aka no snow or ice); projected use is 95% road, perhaps 5% dirt road, stock suspension; there's nothing to go 'wheeling around here that is of interest to me. Perhaps this will be the truck to check out Big Bend in TX at some point.

I'm asking because I haven't bought road (i.e. non-trail...) tires in ages...all my tire purchases in the last decade or more were mud terrains or aggressive all terrains, and I don't think that truck will need any of those. Thanks for the help.
 
honestly the nitto terra grappler is a great road tire with just enough beef to handle some dirt. Not too aggressive, quiet, and good road manners. If you were offroading more I wouldn't suggest them, but they are pretty perfect for that use case.

@Vlad How do the grappler compare to the BFG KO2?
 
The terra grapplers are not the ridge grapplers....I have the terra grapplers and will vouch for Vlads description. They’re great road tires with just enough tread to get you a bit off road. I don’t think they’re in the sandbox class as KO2s

I think you're saying the KO2 is better off-pavement but not as good on-paved. I have no complaints with the KO2 on-pavement. Seems quiet and smooth enough. I would recommend them too.
 
I could be wrong I just thought the terra grapplers were not as tough as the ko2 for off-road. I have also heard- like you report- no complaints on the ko2s. Plus costco has ko2 for about $1000 for 5. I have been eyeing them myself

Michelin make some of the best road tires available. Had 3 work trucks in our fleet that pulled 100k out of them. I’m currently running Cooper Discoverer AT3s on 2 work trucks and they have done quite well. Not too aggressive but will handle most anything that you’ll throw at them. For your use, I’d look for a C-rated tire w/ a 60K warranty. I travel A LOT for my work and go thru tires about every 1 1/2 years so I’m constantly trying new tires.

Not inclined towards BFG tires, might change my mind once they start building tires where the actual size is anywhere close to what one might expect from the designation on the sidewall (the 37 BFG AT's on my K5 measured out 1.5" shorter than the 37 Toyo's that are on there now). And the BFG MT's on the FJ40 seemed to cut relatively easily. Admittedly though, none of this ought to be a concern for this on-road truck, but still...

Perhaps it'll be Nitto TG's /Michelins/ Cooper AT3.

Not SoCal. And that new-to-us GX won't see any dirt until this "I'll lock the doors when I want to" behavior has been deleted... :)
 
I think I am going to try KO2s in 245/75r/17 next. I have been reading too damn many things telling me to go skinny. Which would give back some of what the A/T taketh.
 
@LaserNomad When you buy tires in an unconventional size, think about how easy it is to find a used replacement in case of an emergency.

There are times when you damage one tire only and you are half way on thread depth on the remaining tires.

I thinks there’s a big market of used 255/75R17s from jeeps

@HomersCanyonero I know and agree there are so many more of them and more choices (and if they didnt make the KO2 in that size I would not consider it). I just don't trust used tires, too many times friends and family just end up spending more in the long run trying to keep the cycle of cheap used tires going. Nobody gets rid of perfectly good used tires. Discount tire had the KO2 245s at about $149 each, compared to $229 for 255-265. I replace in pairs ( I know this is how you get 1 perfectly good used tire). I also want to keep it under 32 on the wheel, I know I am a weirdo, but I want to try to split the difference between on and off performance and mpg. My inner hippy doesn't like to be too wasteful...

Currently running 265/70/17s duelers H/L cant say I recommend the duelers, fine for roads I guess, but I do like the size (245s similar diameter just skinnier)
 
Got it. $149/tire is a great deal. Get 5 including the spare and rotate it in. Is that for the C-load tires?
 
I went from Michelins to KO2's. If I was doing a lot of on-road with little off-road plans, the Michelins are the only way to go IMO. Quiet, well mannered in the rain, and last forever. Love my KO2's, but there's definitely a trade-off in road performance.
