TIRE on 16 inch stock split rim

Hi All,
I want to install new tires on 16 inch stock split rims of my 1984 FJ40 without modifying anything. I am not concerned about speed or torque or hard steering.
(1) What is the biggest size ( diameter and width ) of the tires which can be installed ?
(2) Are there any safety issues with bigger size tires on these rims ?
(3) Does manufacturers have any recommendations ?
(4) Is it possible to install tube less tires on such rims ?
(5 What is the width of these rims ?

Need to be used with tubes

The widest I would go is 10.5 wide

Most people like the 255/85r16 ... They are 33" tall and about 10" wide

You can go taller... There are several 900 and 1100 sizes that are narrow for the split rims ... Look up Michelin xzl or xl

I run the 255/85r16 ... Great tall and skinny size for a cruiser IMHO

Today I saw a 275 70 16 tire on a FJ40 and it seemed like that this tire will hit the rear Fender (wheel well ) on jumps !

Would there be any pictures of 255/85r16 or 255/85r15 on a stock FJ40 especially the rear wheel well ? preferably a picture showing clearance with rear wheel well.

I purchased FJ40 from army and it came with tires having tube and liner on the 16 inch split rims. ( I think tires are 700/16LT)

You were asking about the largest size for stock rims... Are you asking about oem rims on a stock height cruiser ?

I need to change tires on the 16" split rims also, but haven't made my selection either. The ones on it right now are much to wide and car like.

Seems that the tall skinny tires are much harder in usage and less comfortable.

Stock the 7.50 or a 235/85r16 is the proper fit

255/85r16 like I said is 33"

Some guys run the 33" tires on a stock cruiser... If you run shackles it will lessen chance of rubbing

If you search for 33" tire and stock height threads here you'll probably get several hits... Search thru google image search with the site:ih8mud.com in the search

As JohnnyC suggested earlier mostly the 255/85/16 is for standard height and stock rims

Btw not all 255/85r16's are the exact same size... My copper st tires are not as wide as my bfg's or toyo m55's that I used to run before the coopers

Does the tire pressure prevents two parts of the stock split rims from separating ?
