I'm looking for info on tire chains. I don't wheel much, but would like some recommendations on chains/cables for my stock height 450 on 285's. They would mostly be used on icy pavement. So basic questions are chains or cables? 1 set or 2?And if I use them on the highway are there any dot requirements? Thanks for the advice.

Can't speak for every state, but your state may not require them while driving in snow, and ice in your LX450. My state Highway patrol will let me pass their chain checkpoint once they see i'm driving a four wheel drive Landcruiser. Now that doesn't mean that chains won't aid your truck with traction in icy conditions. I'm glad i now own a LC, because i always hated getting out of my nice warm car, to put chains on in cold snowy conditions.

If this is for Highway driving get cables. Though i would question your need for them on a paved highway. Your Land Cruiser should be fine on a paved highway until it gets shut down by the state patrol. Get 2 sets if on ice. If for off road get chains. If you try to drive on pavement with chains it’ll rattle your teeth out and you’ll be limited to 25 mph at the very tops.

Highway driving with AT or all season M/S tire in good condition should be more than sufficient on a AWD Land Cruiser. Chains and cables are nothing but a pain in the butt to install, limit speed and can cause body damage if not installed properly. Some states will not allow them to be used on dry roads due to safety (loss of braking) concerns and pavement wear. Having a CDL switch installed so you can enable/disable the CDL and ABS in high range as conditions change would be a better option than chains or cables.

Thanks for the advice. I should have been more clear in my initial post. I don't know if I would ever need them on a highway but was curious if I did choose to, do they need to be dot compliant. My biggest possible need would be county road. It is paved and a lot of times in icy conditions the county does not clear or treat it. Sometimes they put a sign out saying the road is closed, sometimes they don't. So maybe a cheap set of cables would work best for seeing how the primary use will be on pavement. Thanks
