Anyone want to wheel in CT? Just South of Waterbury. Always looking to show some new folks some great trails. About this time last year Miley. Next couple weekends for a date. I wouldn't mind a nite run either.

My rig is apart, it's hard to find places to wheel in CT.
Although I do have a buddy with two jeeps...maybe I could use one...if you don't mind riding with a couple of jeeps in the mix. Next weekend could work I know he'll be in, he's single so no one to ask if he can go. Let me know.
Cheer,
Mike

I wouldn't care if you were on horse back. I have difficulty finding anyone to wheel w/ & the trails are pretty much legal. Say when. Where in CT RU?

The phrase "pretty much legal" scares me. Care to fill us in on where you go? I (and many others here I know) take land use pretty seriously. Not accusing you of anything, just trying to get the whole picture is all.

No trail is legal to wheel. You just sneak and get away with it. Renegade wheeling is bad for the sport. You must get land owners permission first. I used to love renegade wheeling until I found this club and became responsible.

Right, it's legal or it's not!

Legal?

I'm in New Milford, but pretty much legal scares me too. Kind of like a little pregnant. Can you clarify that point?

you own the land = legal

you get permission from the owner of private land = legal

power line trails = illlegal

ny's power line trails are private owned lands...you need to ask for permission
ma's is the same i think as well as CT or else = illegal

VT for the most part is all state owned lands around powerlines....they are very lax about driving on it...or at least used to be...still = illegal

i hope you dont take this the wrong way...not trying to flame ya...just pointing out if not already known :)

its all good...in ma there was quite a bit of places to wheel...and some in CT and NH....it is illegal...(drive at your own risk)...but...if its not being trashed and not being abused...then they look the other way...then its "pretty much legal" :)

Let's find out where he's talking about before we hang him. There are a couple legal areas in Southeastern CT. Or he could have permission for private property. If not, we'll educate him on the right ways......

I must be getting either sick or soft in my old age. If any of you actually know me, you're probably wondering the same thing.....

Wow! Nevermind. I'm going to avoid the pow wow & for go the invites. I know what the deal is and, no offense, I don't feel obligated to air it out. I'm responsible as I need to be & none of the locals feathers have been ruffled.

okaaayyy......... Not sure how to take that.

You take it this way. He is wheeling illegaly and does not want to admit it. But he is responsible and not trashing the place so the locals don't raise an eyebrow.

That's what I was afraid of.....just becasue you're not getting caught doesn't make it legal.

A lot of people in this community work very hard to get legal places for you to wheel. One mistake, one bad press article, one person getting stuck where they're not supposed to be makes it all for naught.

Why not hook up with a group like Freedom Trail Riders? It's not a Toyota club, but they have access to lots of private land, and go on frequent runs as far as I know. I know I would if I could get my POS running...

Or Jonfund (they're more CT based)

JonFund is a bit difficult to get in with (or at least it is for me). I'm hoping they invite me this year to join. I applied almost a year ago and they only take new members in April.

Hey Roger... any news in the RIOHVA world?

I'm a member of Jonfund as well. Our membership renews in April, but you can pay a prorated year plus whatever is left to get you to April. Basically a year and a quarter at this point. They do this so everyone renews at the same time. membership is capped at 100, but there are spots available. If you applied, you should be on the waiting list. If you need someone to sponsor you, let me know. Contact Art T. the Membership Dir if you're still interested.

Or he could just pony up the $20 to join here.... (that reminds me, need to contact Dave.)

Nothing new to report with RIOHVA. I've been fairly well distanced from it lately though. Enough on the plate with the new club and all.

Id love to go wheeling with some new folks! PM me whoever or whenever. My 40 is hibernating but I have a 1st gen runner that can take a bit of abuse. I live in Torrington and I wouldnt mind traveling. Anyone game for next week? Im a teacher and I have next week off!
As far as legality goes, I think you all are on the right track. I have been wheeling illegally since I got my license and I am fully aware of the consequences so please dont lecture me. However I am an outspoken proponent of Tread Lightly! and I have always been totally cooperative with the authorities when encounters are inevitable. I would never blast through a big mud hole and create more erosion nor would I ever leave a designated trail and I always leave the place that I go better than I left it (I pick up trash or block off deliquent trails and always represent our sport properly to mountain bikers, hikers and the like). Now with that being said, the only way to wheel legally in CT is to know someone who owns land or pay money and I cant totally agree with that.
Dont get me wrong I think joining clubs and meeting good people is a great way to enjoy the sport but we are enabling CT to continue to not support trail use or land designation with the use of tax money. This is the same reason I would never register an off-road vehicle in CT. My taxes on that vehicle go into the general fund and not to further the sport.
Well sorry for the rant. I hope no one is offended by my novel here but as an educated and well intentioned citizen I believe using state land properly is just fine.
