My FJ40 has been in the garage far to long. It needs a lot of TLC, and I really want to do an engine, disk brake and power steering conversion, but I really just want to get her back in the road in the meantime.

The sad thing is that I really don't have all that much to do.

1. The gas tank needs attention. I think it might be clogged up for having a lot of really old gas in it. My first project is to get it pulled out and cleaned up. My ultimate goal is to take the tank out from under the front seat entirely and just use a Confer style tank under the bed.

2. My carb needs attention. As I mentioned in a previous message, the PO put in a Weber which has been a problem since the day I bought the cruiser. It really needs re-built yet again, and it simply isn't going to happen. Hopefully I can find a decent carb off of a 1F motor, but if not, I am not sure what I am going to do, unless there are some Weber gurus up here in the Phoenix area.

I spent all day yesterday cleaning up my garage so I actually have a place to work on it, and I plan on pulling the seats and the center console out in the evenings after work this week to get started on the tank.

If I can get these done, and get her through emissions, hopefully I will be bringing her to a Friday night get together in the very near future.

IMHO, keep the underseat tank and add an extra in the back, you'll be thankful on long trips not having to haul cans of fuel. If your engine is still a good runner, buy a non-usa rebuilt carb from sor...
Upgraded brakes, power steering, and suspension have always been on my to-do list. I know these will come someday, but my main priority is to keep it mechanically sound and have fun in it..

I really don't want to put much into this engine, even though it runs well, it is the old style that had the press on crank pulley. It has long since become loose, and you can hear it rattle around whenever the engine is running. I have no doubt that it will lead to a bad main bearing or some such. At some point, I should probably have someone weld it on, but just never got to it.

Trollhole sells OEM replacement carbs now, check into it

Tim Hill might be another possible source .....?

I really should get down and visit Tim, been a few years since I have talked to him, but those from Trollhole look really interesting.

And so the fun starts. Got the gas tank pulled out tonight and it is pretty much shot. It wasn't in the greatest of shape when I bought it, but had some work done to it and got a good 5 or 6 years out of it. I don't see it being worthwhile to even mess around with it now, time to just scrap it and move on.

Does anyone have any experience with any of the poly ones? My other alternative is what I had mentioned before and just go with the confer style, and forget about the incab one.

Mine was in the same shape. I bought a new one from SOR..If you put 2 or 3 layers of quality paint on it and use closed cell insulation under the straps, should last you a lifetime.

I guess I shouldn't complain, the tank was 42 years old afterall.

Tim has decent used tanks laying around. That is how I replaced mine.

I just dropped Tim an email. It would be nice to make a little road trip and visit with him.

You might want to check with Khrystal at Camelback Toyota for a new tank. Tell her you're part of Copper State Cruisers. I was able to get a new old stock (NOS) tank for my 40 out of LA for way less than SOR. From what I've heard from others, stay far far away from the poly tanks.

I heard back from Tim and it looks like he has what I need, guess that shouldn't be a surprise, now I just have to figure out when I am going to head down there.

If you need someone to sclep parts for you, I am not too far from him and will be making a run to Sanderson Ford in the not to distant future..

X2 on Krystal

Like many manufacturers, sometimes the price for factory parts can run the gamut from "wow" expensive to suprisingly inexpensive.

Its always good to call and check first.

Ive seen many factory parts less expensive than aftermarket copies.

I've got a poly tank that you can have for FREEE! I would prefer the stock tanks, but if you want this one, free is hard to beat. I'm up in Pinetop and you're welcome to pick it up. I might be making a trip down to the Valley soon and could bring it, but not sure when that will be exactly.

Thanks, but I am heading down to visit Tim tomorrow after work and pick one up from him. I appreciate the offer though.
