So I would appreciate some help. I just heard this ticking noise about 300 miles ago today. We are about to hit the Mojave dessert and I need to get this issue addressed.

I have a 95 landcuiser

When I listen to it the noise seems to becoming from the alternator. I can barely here it from the cabin but once I pop the hood and standing in front of it. The sounds seems to come from the front right side of the engine.

Tensioner pulley or maybe old belts? Try and take off the pulley and change your belts. Worth a try. You could also try the wooden dowel trick. Put one end on what you think it could be and the other end to your ear and listen. Should be able to rule in or out an alternator or power steering pump that way.

Yeah get a mechanic stethescope or a wooden dowel and start narrowing down where it's coming from. The power steering pump has been known to be a source of noise, but usually only after a rebuild.

You could run the engine without the belts to confirm it is coming from a peripheral and not inside for example the timing chain. As above check the belts for missing pieces, fold them back on themselves to check for cracks. Once confirmed then get the belts back on and if you cannot get a stethoscope use a long screw drive, put the but of the handle against your ear and the tip in the tensioner, water pump, alternator et al and the noise should be amplified. While in there put on new belts anyway and put the spares in the trunk.

Hope you find the problem before your trip.

regards

Dave
