I started pulling apart my front knuckle for a long over do rebuild. And I came across some missing parts? This is a March 1972 FJ40 with the warn barrel style lock-o-matic hubs. There should be a thrust washer between the spindle nut and locking ring nut (dealer installed with the little allen keys)-correct? If yes, mine is gone? I have searched and cannot find an available thrust washer for my year. 1975 and up pop up everywhere on the usual parts sites. I know 72s were a bit special as they were moving over to 73. I have come across 70, and 71 parts factory installed. Does anyone know the size and thickness I would need to source this? My locking nut is a 50 mm not a 54 and has an inside diameter of 36.55/37mm. I used a 50 mm socket to get it off. I found a source that sells thrust washers that measure 37 mm ID, 57 mm OD and 3.5 mm thick-which will fit. My main concern is the thickness? Anybody got one laying around they can measure or if anyone has 2 (yes I tore into the other side and that one is missing too) they want to get rid of let me know. Why is it NEVER EASY...

The toothed washer with the holes in it IS your thrust washer. It was designed that way because nothing bigger can fit into the bore of that particular locking hub. Yes, it is a compromise, and yes I have seen that washer fail. What I do not know is if it is an inherent weakness in the design, or failure due to lack of maintenance.

I disagree. I'm pretty sure it is Warn part. I've found and seen that type of washer and round spanner locking nut in multiple types of older Warn locking hubs. My trail rig with a dana 44 frt end uses those that type of washer and round nuts. The missing thrust washer the OP is asking about, wouldn't have anything to do with what type of lock out it uses. The thrust washer in question goes against the outer wheel bearing.

Just a follow up to my situation. I ordered new thrust washers and nuts from cruiser outfitters. I reassembled and the drum style warn hub was able to fit with the new thrust washer in place. Not sure why the thrust washer was removed in the first place???
