I had a strange one happen last night.....

I was driving along smelling burning oil, blaming it on the Chrysler MV in front of me, only to find that the smell was still there after he turned! Uh Oh!

As it turns out, my oil cap came off. Upon closer inspection, it appears as if the throttle cable unscrewed it as the plastic on the cable is worn through in 2 places by the oil cap.

Has anyone ever seen this? I suppose my throttle cable is probably going bad.

Thanks,

are you implying that your throttle cable grew fingers and thumbs and unscrewed the oil cap while you were driving?

:D

honestly, no, I've never had something like that happening.

I've forgotten to screw the cap back on after filling with oil in the past, but I can't say that I've ever had a cable take try to take out another part -- so far, the turf wars have been kept to a minimum under my hood.

:D

It sounds like your throttle cable is a bit loose or has come off the bracket that suspends it. I had to secure mine to the bracket because it wouldnt' hold any longer.

When was the last time you did your oil change or opened your oil cap? Did you do it or some one else did it?

Honestly, I can't imagine how this happened either! I changed the oil myself - and I am overdue at the moment. I should also mention that the cap was still laying in the engine compartment!

Here is a picture of the cable and oil cap

That can't be where the cable is supposed to be, can it??

Mystery Solved!!!

I have just had my team of LC experts look over this most intriguing of problems and they have spotted the culprit. You have the rare and dreaded "Throttle Cable Attacks Oil Cap" syndrome. In the upper left corner of your pic you'll notice the head-mounted bracket that holds the cable. The black plastic coating has worn off, allowing your pesky cable to move about  (see what happens when you don't open your hood for months? ) and attack its archenemy the oil cap. There may yet be time to slide the cable back towards the gold inline nut and squeeze the clamp with pliers young Luke. Then TIGHTEN YOUR OIL CAP AND clean that filthy :censor: engine bay. :flipoff2:

I thought mine is some inches ( maybe 6 - 8 ) farway of the oil cap ..
