Besides the price what are peoples thoughts on this? Is this mint green? This might be what I am looking for based on the "quality" of the rust and the condition of the engine.
Everytime I read something new in the "Saving the Rust Bucket" thread or some great story of someones fix/build my desire to own one of these amazing vehicles gets bigger.

At first glance I see diamond plate in the rear tub, not a good sign... I'd call up Iron Pig and see what they could tell you, they're great guys....
 
Hell if wants 12 for that im going to ask 13 for mine! I see too much rust for 12. Engine looks kinda nasty too. Like brian said call the guys at iron pig.
 
They bezel is upside down which means the owner doesn't know much about these trucks and has the impression that it'll bring him a lot of cash. Looks like another 10k of work will be needed on that one for a proper restoration, if the body is in that good a shape. If your not looking for a resto truck you can easily find one closer to 5k. The pics lean toward 8k at the most for that truck.

That is the best statement i've ever heard.... I feel that way every time I see an overpriced rig... either they know nothing about it or have never turned a wrench on it.


The problem with you saying ignore the price is that price factors into if a rig is "nice" or not.

It looks like a decent rig................. for 5k, and if someone showed me the truck and said this is my land cruiser i'd say nice rig.... now if someone said I paid 12k for it.... i'd think some things in my mind :doh:

Kinda like this scenario... if someone showed me a 97 corvette that looked like it rolled off the factory floor and only had 20k on it i'd say nice rig.... i'd say great rig if they said they paid 15k for it i'd say great rig. If they said they paid 48k for it i'd look at them funny.


From the pics it looks decent... a little cleaning and paint and it should be good as long as it is mechanically sound........ like Brian said call Iron Pig

"As I mentioned, there is some surface rust. The car needs to be repainted at some point to preserve the value. It may not have to be the first thing that is done, but to bring it up to it's potential, it will eventually need to be painted again. There is NO bondo on this cruiser. The floor pan was replaced from the firewall back with diamond plate. Thicker than the original metal, but can't be seen from the outside and destroying the original look.

It runs and drives well, but it hasn't been on the road for a couple of years. It needs a routine tune up and fluid changes, but it fires up quickly and runs great. No missing.

When we had the pan redone, the entire back portion of the frame was exposed, cleaned up and treated with rust inhibiting paint. That is from the firewall on back. That wasn't done on the front part of the frame, but it is in good shape. We also had some work done on the rear sill.

As far as miles, I couldn't say. The odometer isn't working. Everything is there on the instrument cluster, but not everything works as it should.

As far as price, I'm willing to move some, but I'm not going to give it away. We put a lot of money into it when we got it and these old cruisers appreciate in value. "

The bolding is my own emphasis. I never knew diamond deck was a value adder :-) I wouldn't necessarily consider it so. The guy is probably never going to talk to me again but I'm going to offer 8. It looks like it still needs body and mechanical work and I am not super excited about the rear half. Any further thoughts?
 
I'm a noob at this but I say pass. In these hard times some mud member will give you a good deal on a 40 that is worth 12k and you know the background. My
2 cents. And come to the barn coming up and you can see some 40s and talk values. Patience grasshopper!

I think that this is the best advice yet. You need to see some 40s and get a feel for what you are looking at. $12K WOW!!!
 
Why do you not link up with someone like me or another 40 owner and let them show you what you are looking for besides posting a new thread on every cruiser you find. I will gladly take an hour or 2 out of my day to show you what you need to look for / ask about.


I know where you are coming from but you need to just stop and get some knowledge under your belt loops.

Have you bothered to look under my website under Steves build to see what "pretty " will get you ? Heck come here in person and look at it in person and really see what " pretty " will get you. " Pretty " got him 20 lbs of bondo and now a new 3/4 tub. BTW he paid more than the prices you are posting and got nothing for it .
 
I appreciate all of your advice. Especially the patience part. Canuck, I am going to see what November looks like and try and make it out to your shop. My next real time off isn't until January so the 40 idea is going to be shelved until then when I can travel to check out some rigs and figure out what I need to be looking at. Thanks.
 
Chris, I really think that you should just look around and check out other peoples rides. Heck, if you ever make it to Uwharrie i will show you what to look for as well as others can kick in their knowledge.

For me it was a 45 for years. It got so bad for me while spending close to a year in Northern Afghanistan i would stop this poor old man every day as we seen him coming back from missions and try to buy it from him. It was in great shape, but he was like heck no. After awhile he started inviting us to supper all the time and we all hit it off pretty well, but he would never sell it to me. And then it would of been heck trying to fit it into a Conex coming back here. Sure i could of got alot of pieces of it back but not the frame and big stuff.

I bought my first 40 series for 1000.00 dollars but it had a locked up motor. Built the engine and the rest of the drivetrain then and still have the cruiser to this day and no rust to speak of in it. It is a 75 FJ40.I have probably got 6,000 into this thing tops and have a good tub / doors / top (both hard and soft ) and i wheel it like it is supposed to.

And you can even come out here on a Saturday / Sunday afternoon and i will teach / show you what to look for.

BTW. Bought the 40 in the late 80's.

I am going to PM you my schedule and see when we can setup a time for me to come out there for a couple of hours. I would love to get to know the 40s better. I am going to spend tonight going through Steve's build.
I have pretty specific desires for the 40 so your input will be invaluable. I'm going to continue to follow the market and keep my eyes on the prize.
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. This rig is a bomb in disguise I think based on information from seller and some things in the additional photos they sent me.
 
I want to echo what CBK said in addition to getting into the 40 Series Forum. In addition to the general forum content the FAQ section is a huge repository of cruiser knowledge that you can pore through and learn tons.

Hopefully we will have a HAMOM one of these weeks and get some 40 experience and you can watch us stand around and drink beer more than we turn wrenches:beer:
