I wanted to get opinions on this 2009 LX 570 that's available a few miles away from me. I know these engines and trucks can go well past that, but it's still hard for me to justify buying a used car with almost 200k miles. They're asking about $19k.

Pros
  • Detailed inside and out
  • No rust
  • CA and OR-owned
  • Serviced at Lexus dealerships for the most part
  • Timing chain and water pump service performed recently
  • 3 month, 3,000 mile limited powertrain warranty included
  • Exterior and interior color are what I wanted
  • All-terrain tires and painted wheels are also a plus
Cons
  • 2 damage reports (2021 and 2022) on CARFAX with no mention of severity
  • Almost 200k miles
  • Unsure of service to AHC system
  • Only 16 service history records on CARFAX
  • No service history on the CARFAX report after 168k miles
  • Wiring harness needed to be replaced (unsure if it was completed)
  • Catalytic converter needed to be replaced (previous owner declined repairs on 2/29/24)
  • Ceiling-mounted DVD player (ideally I'd want one without it but I wouldn't mind it that much)
I feel like the asking price is reasonable and the dealer has been very responsive. Wanted to get thoughts and opinions and anything else I may need to ask the dealer about. Thanks!

what harness are we talking about?
This is pulled directly from the Lexus service history on the website. It gets cutoff so I'm not sure if anything was replaced:

You can call them and ask them if it was replaced. Actually, if you buy it from a Lexus\Toyota dealer they can look it up for you. I saw it is not a L/T dealership and it does not look like they do too much fixing.

Damage reports - do they specify the area or can you infer it? If yes, you can inspect the body and under the skin to see if the repairs were done right. Even an untrained eye can tell a bad body job. An untrained eye may not be able to tell the diff between a good one and an excelent one, but it sounds like you'll be happy with a good job anyway.

Assuming the other stuff checks out Ok, the big-ticket item on that list is the cat. Get an estimate for a new cat and the harness.
Who is doing the PPI for you? There are both Lexus and Toyota dealers in Portland/Vancouver. I got my LX from same area and inspected it in Vancouver @ T. My truck was serviced in Portland @ L dealership and I did not want to inspect it where it was maintained.

But how is that the cat needs replacement but no cells and 3 years warranty?

I was considering doing that, especially when it comes to the catalytic converter and harness. They actually are the ones that did the service on the timing chain and water pump. Also, any warranty work with their limited warranty would need to go through them. So they can/do work on vehicles there, apparently.

I've asked the dealer and they do not have any additional info on the damage reports. I have yet to see it in person but was planning on doing so in the next couple weeks if it's still available.

Definitely. I asked the dealer about those two items on the Lexus service history today but have not heard back. I would most likely take it to Lexus of Portland. However, Toyota of Portland (on Broadway) is much closer. Given your recommendation, I may have it inspected at Toyota of Portland and maintained at Lexus of Portland, if I purchase.

Your guess is as good as mine. Here is the line from the service history about it:

Also, here are some photos of the undercarriage the dealer provided.

That looks good especially for a 09. There looks like there was oil leaking on the driver side - coating on the frame. It might be gone now after the work done.

check water pump replacement history, coolant replacement history, idler pulley, valley plate leak inspection if possible

Yeah the undercarriage is super clean. May I ask where you’re seeing that? Is it the first photo?

Water pump was replaced by them recently. I would have the mechanic inspect the rest during the pre-purchase inspection.

Yes, first, frame looks "wet" unlike the rest of it.
Ah, yeah I can see it. Good catch. Looks darker and not “dirty” like the rest of the frame. Hope they’d catch something like that during the pre-purchase inspection.

This is another LX 570 that’s a top contender for me. Way less mileage and better CARFAX history with no accidents. Only downsides are it’s at the top of my price range, it’s in Denver, I haven’t seen the undercarriage yet, and it was in NY for at least 8 years. Service history is a bit spotty. But it has KO2 tires, painted wheels, and no DVD player in the ceiling.

By "timing chain replaced", do you mean the serpentine belt?
My question too. “Timing chain service” doesn’t have a set interval iirc.

This is what they said on the listing. I'll ask the dealer for clarification. I also assumed that the timing chain never needed to be replaced:

FRESH COMPLETE TIMING CHAIN + WATER PUMP JOB ( just performed )

This was their response:

"The timimg chain was replaced along with the water pump. When the timing chain guides wear out they become noisy."

The dealer sent me a video of the undercarriage of a different 2009 LX 570 that's out of state in Denver, CO. Thoughts on this undercarriage? Doesn't look too bad. Not as good as the one in Portland but this LX has 55k less miles.

You realistically won't find a more rust free vehicle. I'd be skeptical about the NY vehicle for sure.
The lack of rust is a heck of a selling point; mechanical stuff is fixable. Rust? Well...

Well said. I'm still skeptical about the 200k miles. Especially since I'd be coming from an '02 G-wagon with 117k miles lol. But I know these things can run well over that.

Just looking for something a bit more practical and comfortable within my price range that'll leave me enough of a monetary gap to put back into it.

I bought my 2008 LC with 193,000 miles two years ago. I would have never thought I'd buy a used car with nearly 200K on the odometer but... now at almost 230K it's not been an issue and drives like a new vehicle. The issue noted wouldn't scare me. I'm not sure about how a cat can fail but even that isn't a catastrophic item to change and isn't terribly involved. That code can point to an exhaust leak or simply a faulty O2 sensor so would check those issue as well.

I've not doubted my purchase at all... these vehicles are just solid.
