Hi All:

I've heard good things about the worm-drive Ramsey winches. But, honestly, for a vehicle as heavy as a 60 Series the M12 would probably be best. And, one can rarely go wrong with a M8274, IMHO.

If you can put up with a slow line speed the RE8000 should serve you fine.

Good luck!

Alan

I've only seen three RE8000s burn up under load on the trail. But I've only seen 3 RE8000s on the trail.

Probably just odd coincidence. Probably.

Hi All:

Mark, are you referring to the Ramsey RE Series or REP series?

The REP Series are the light-duty electric winches. The RE Series are the worm-drive units, which I believe are often used on tow trucks (?)

Regards,

Alan

I haven't paid much attention to Ramseys so I may be using the wrong nomenclature. The ones I saw fail were SLOW and they were worm drives. They may have been worn out abused and not fair examples. All I know is that the ones I have been around on the trail pretty much sucked.

I'm interested in worm gear winches as well. I've heard lots of good things about the Superwinch Husky 10K but I don't know if that fits into an ARB bumper all that well. Anyone ever tried???

When you 'need' a winch...you need a good one. A winch is not a good place to try to save money. Get a Warn & be done with it.

RE series worm drive winches are solid winches with a reputation for reliability. I have seen most of them on tow trucks. They are easy to spot, since the motor is perpendicular to the drum. I have only seen 1 on a cruiser and like the 8274, they are small enough to fit between the frame rails.

Most of the Ramsey winches you see on off road vehicles are the planetary drive REP series and they aren't as strong and reliable as the RE winches.

I had an RE8000 on my first Cruiser. It was a great winch that would pull through anything but it was SLOW! I had much better luck with than one than the Warn M8000 I have on my 80 now.

The worm gear winches do require a fair amount of room for mounting so keep that in mind. However, i vote for the 8274 if you can make it work!
