Would the third member from a 77FJ40 4:1 fit into an 83FJ60 4:1? does anyone know if the spline count is the same or will this not work. Why you ask would I need to know this, I have a few extra thirds from my old 77 that I would like to ARB and put into my FJ60.
Thanks
Matt
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the spline in the drive shaft IS the same, so you can make a half 40, half 60 shaft and not have to mess with changing flanges.
The 77 companion flange bolt pattern will be the same as an 83 FJ60, so yes, it will bolt directly in. The coarse pinion would give me pause and that alone would keep me from doing the swap.
My FJ60 is running 78 diffs from an FJ40, and 78 was the year Toyota went to a fine spline pinion.
You won't need to mess with the drive shaft at all if you do the swap.

You can't go swapping driveline parts back and forth without re-balancing the assembly. And ditto on the coarse splined gear sets. Stay with the fine splined sets, thay are much stronger.
If you have 4.11s in your 60 now where did they come from? 60s in the US had 3.73 R&P.
The "downgrade" in strength while technically accurate will not be an issue for most people. Wheeling HARD might break a pinion... the rest of us would be fine. That said if you have access to FJ62 4.11 diffs (fine spline pinion) go for them... otherwise I wouldn't sweat it if you are moderate in your use of the go pedal, don't have a V8 and/or 38" swampers.
Without a antirap-bar both pioions are crap. With a antirap-bar a corse spline pinion is fine. SOA will kill a pinion fast with out a rap bar. SUA is much more forgiving
if the flange's don't work out, I would try the driveshaft thing above and see if it works. I've run a couple of homemade unbalanced driveshafts with no problems.

I consider it an upgrade to put 4.11s in a 60 that had 3.73s... for my wheeling use (crawling). It's really a significant change. And economical if you can get a diff with 4.11 already. If you are going to do an ARB install then you might consider going to 4.56 or 4.88 R&P (you need to do front and rear the same of course). "While you are in there" with the ARB install is the time to change R&P. Then you can temporarily swap in the 4.11s you have (using the hybrid driveshaft for the time being) and use your existing 3.73 housings for the new ARB/R&P swap....
While we are on this topic, I have heard that LC third members will fit in the truck housings. Will an FJ60 third fit into an FJ80 front axle housing? I would love to find a housing and just throw in my third member since it has the correct gears already. Anybody know the answer to this?
