I have found an excellent 1992 FJ80 for $5000 in my area.

171,000 miles.

Can any of you give me some feedback on the price.

What kind of maintenance costs and issues should I expect?

What kind of mileage do these guys get? (Hopefully something more than my FJ60!)

What should I inspect before buying (hidden rust, things that always break, etc.)

Thanks!!

Chris

You are going to want to check out the FAQ at the top of the 80's list and read about the difference between the FJ80 and FZJ80. We need more information on the one you are looking at, condition, records etc to give you an idea of price and this will vary widely based on your location. The FJ80 has the 3FE which will run over 300K if properly maintained, but its heavier then the 60/62 so it considered a real dog power wise. I can promise you this, you can expect little if any increase in gas mileage for either of them. Also check out this link;

Hay Chris I don't know much but I do know you probably want at least a 93 or newer . I picked up my two 94's for 5700.00 ea. one has fack lockers . 93 and newer has 4.5 L more power!

i bought my '91 over a year ago with the same miles for $4500 --

-- go lower --

:D

Plus, mine had the poser 16" wheels on it --

-- mileage is worse than the 60s, because AWD -- though mayb better b/c newer tech -- 12-13 mpg --

-- look at the knuckles, exhaust, rust on tail hatch --

post pics!

-- for what it's worth, i enjoy driving my '91 more than my '94 --

-- it's all personal preference --

gas mileage will be pretty much the same or less for a 91-92 than a 60.

if its in really good shape and has some extras, $5,000 might not be bad. depends where your at too

Most of the 80 series Ive seen for sale around here (wyoming) seem to have a higher price tag than other places. and if a dealer has a decent one its gone in less than a month usually.

there was a 91 on the lot last year at a independent used car dealer and they were asking $7,000 its the only one ive seen sit for a while at a dealer.

if you can go to 93 and up you should gain about 2-3 miles a gallon from what people have posted.

check the knuckles-do a search on here.

For what it's worth, I have a '91 with 180,000 on it and paid $3800. I wouldn't sell it for less than $5000. I've also owned a '96 but sold it because I like the '91 better. There is no PHH on the 3FE, no head gasket problems (that I've heard of), never any green sludge puking out during coolant flushes, and no start-up rattle. My '91 has a hard time beating a school bus off the line, but I can live with that. The FZJ's really do drive nice, I just like the older engine. Expect 12 mpg. Rear hatch rust can always be fixed. The exhaust systems are pretty expensive, but seem to last. I'd try for $4500 if it's clean. Good luck.

I bought my 91 fpr 4200.00 and it only has a 138,000 miles. I do gaurantee you'll enjoy one if you get it.

Thanks for the tips!

I wasn't able to get a closer look or drive this weekend, but will try tonight.

It does have some extras like a ski rack (big deal I know) and a nice bull bar bumper.

I didn't see in the faqs the difference between a FJ80 and FZJ80?

I just assumed it was an FJ80 (don't know why)

What are the differences? Is it obvious?

Thanks

The most obvious visual difference is the FJ80 (91-92) doesn't have the slightly mirrored factory tint on the windows, and it as the 15" wheels which are the same ones you see on the pickups and 4runners of that era. The FZJ80 (93-97) has the factory tint and 16" wheels. But the real differnces are not "visible", FJ has 155hp, FZJ has 215hp, big difference when you drive it, FJ has rear drum brakes/no ABS/no rear full floater axle, FZJ has 4 wheel disc, ABS, rear full floater, interior materials were improved in the FZJ, those are the main differences that I can thin of. I would get a FZJ, hands down. Drive them both and you wil know what you can live with.

How can I tell if the rig has front or rear diff locks?

The 91-92 did not come with factory front/rear diff locks. They would be aftermarket, if at all.

(The 93-97 came with a front/rear diff lock option, which included a dial to the left of the steering wheel (left hand drive).)
