Dougal, beleive what you will. we had the GPS running the entire trip. i drove a different vehicle and the guy driving the 40 is an engineer and a stickler for accuracy so if you want to say he is wrong. well, that is up to you.

i really do not care what you believe either way since the actual figures do not lie. if a 3400 km trip doesn't fit your 'long term average' then you are unreasonable.

i am through with this discussion, John, if you want any advice then contact me direct. i am out of here.

Wayne,
Thanks, I'll be in touch.

Dougal

That was the long-term average. Another guy I used to know had a Fairey overdrive in his BJ40, he claimed 27mpg before the OD installation, no change in the city after because he didn't use it there, but 35 mpg on the highway. Towing a 20 foot travel trailer was about 20-22mpg before and after, but with the OD Prince George was 2 hrs closer to Vancouver than without.

Thats my long term average taken over the last 2 months in fricking cold weather. I turned my fuel down as I am blowing lots of black and I expect to save fuel because I may only drive 100kms/hr but I like to get to that speed fast - so I expect to get better mileage. If I could squeeze 650-700 kms/tank I'd be happy.

My old bj60 got 28mpg religiously year round and always pinned to the floor, I think the sales brochure said it was supposed to get 32mpg IIRC (that means nothing though). I will be honest that I haven't pulled heavy loads but I put 1000 pounds of snowmobiles on the back and when I get a headwind the economy goes down. Wayne must have a special touch:)

or I'm faw*** stupid or my wheather make a big influence .. I never got anything over 22mpg down here .. even DI or IDI engines ..

Actually always get better MGP from Tencha than Marilu .. means to me the IDI engines have much more fuel eficience than DI ..

or at least in my case ..

P.S. I'm engineer but computer related .. just a wanna be mechanic !

How you drive has a bigger impact than what you drive. I get better mileage on my Ford than my friend does in his little Nissan Versa (a.k.a. Tiida in some parts of the world) with it's puny 4 pot gasser. Then again he drives it like a nut case, and I'm cruising along at 55 MPH in 5th gear in the slow poke lane and I get from 25-30 MPG (US gal). Average is closer to 25 though, but it's a 2.3 L I4 out of a Ford Focus mated to a Mazda 5 speed manual. It struggles to do anything, even move the vehicle, yet it drives.

I guess this means Tapage babies his Tencha, but goes out and abuses Marilu. :grinpimp:

If it makes you feel better, see what this group of Aussies are getting.
1HZ Fuel Consumption in a 100 series? - DownUnder4x4

I'm not really worried on how much fuel need my cruisers .. ( at least not yet ) but surpriseme always when I saw those extraordinary fuel numbers around here ..

Actually I'm happy with the powa .. and if I need to sacrifice it for fuel eficience .. no thanks.

Find a 14bt in El Salvador....25mpg, great low end torque, 70 mph at 2300 rpm, I have this engine in a Bj70 in the 40 should be fantastic.

I was waiting for the 14B guys to show. Thanks for the input. What has your experience been with getting parts, ease of maintainance. How long have you had the engine and what, if any, issues have you had with it?
Thanks,
John

PM sent your way!

Well I will put my 13B-T mileage in there. I get around 22-24 mpg on the highway here in western British Columbia. I rarely go past 110km/h because of the Marks underdrive and cruiser club convoying for offroad trips 2800rpm at 110 km/h. The highest I have reached for mileage is 28mpg that was in the North West Terrtories last summer 70km/h in 5 at 1750rpm several hours at a time.

Well guys I visited the parts center for the local Toyota dealership yesterday, finally found an assistant manager who got what I was doing in rebuilding my 40 and learned the following. I confirmed what all my other inquiries indicated, not only was the 15B not ever brought to this market but the only way to get one or parts for it would be to order everything and anything to do with the engine from Japan. 14B can be had, used and with the same parts problem as the 15B.

The 1HZ is plentiful here (Coaster busses and some Dyna trucks) and they carry everything for it. Suprisingly the cost for a new crate 1HZ here would be a whopping $16K+. When my mechanic estimated between $15 and 18K in an earlier conversation I was skeptical. The parts manager reminded me that despite the modern surroundings of the dealership this was a poor country and in 15 years he had never seen anyone buy a crate engine, just too expensive to buy one at a time and no market to support importation in volume which would bring the per unit cost down. He said that the two other cruiser heads who he works with all do the same thing, they either buy the major engine components new and basically put a new engine together or if they get lucky they find a relative low milage used engine and rebuild it using new components. Don't laugh not uncommon to rebuild an engine here using used parts which are "newer" than project engine. His estimate, going used or used rebuilt will run between 1500 to 4K USD. I wonder what a new, crate 1HZ would cost in the U.S. or Canada.

contact Dave at Japan 4X4... he was working on new crate 1HZs for the NA market...

Wayne,
Thanks. I was working with Dave trying to find the 15B. I'll get in touch with him.

Lightning struck , seas parted...

I have been on the hunt now for a 1HZ which I thought was going to be easier to get hold of than the 15B in this neck of the woods and nada. I went to every place here known to get quality stuff and same story everywhere, "you're right it is a great engine and that's why no one ever let's go of them..." Then yesterday lighting struck, red sea parted etc, blah blah and I got a call from the first guy used parts guy I ever found here. He thanked me for stopping by his shop a week before and said that he saw a 1HZ with 70,000 kms on the clock attached to an H55f 5 spd and a split case on his agent's latest pre-auction list in Japan. He wondered if I was interested in it even though it had all the "stuff" that he didn't think I was interested in. He said that it had already been tested there and the compression was good and that it came with a 1 year warranty once it gets here if I was interested. After some chit chat (read haggle) on the price I hit him with a deposit yesterday and it will be packed next week placed on a boat and delivered here near the end of next month.:bounce::bounce2::bounce:
So in about 6 weeks time I will be the proud new owner of an HZJ-40, 5spd, split case. Anyone interested in an H41 4spd hooked to a split case look me up then. The B engine maybe available if the offers for it now don't pan out. Yess this throws the rest of my re-build schedule into a cocked hat but I'm a really happy camper right now. Many thanks to Dennis and his dad Alirio at Arme-Parts here in San Salvador. They put up with me bugging them to stay on the engine hunt for 6 months now. :bounce2::bounce2::bounce2:

top end is not a problem with the 1HZ turbo.
if you are doing this swap then find a set of 3.7s and stick them into the diffs and a set of 33s.
if you also have the H55F then you will love this setup on the US highways...
if you want the best milage then keep it under 60 mph... you will have the power to pass (easily) if needed but also the milage to make you happy.

cheers and best luck in the build...

also find yourself a 60 series power steering box since the one you have will not work with this swap...

Wayne,
Somehow I missed some of this when it was posted but we are thinking just alike. The 60 series box is going on as we speak. I just found the 3.7 gears and I already running 33s, although I was giving some thought to 35s:meh:. Now I'm on the look out for a CT26 turbo and an intercooler..any ideas on compatible sizes brands for this setup?
John
P.S.
I did get in touch with Dave re: the 1HZ and while he wasn't real hopeful he was willing to give it a try.

with a healthy 1HZ ( and turbo on the plans ) you only need 4.11 and welcome 35" .. unless you are expecting rock crawling or sometthing else ..
