Well...after a nice Labor day weekend trip, I am NOT happy to report that I got the worst highway gas mileage EVER since I have owned my 100 :frown:

With my 100 FULLY loaded, with 4 people and tons of cargo, My first tank of the trip netted me a whopping 8.7 MPG !!

Yes, my rig is heavier than it has ever been also, but GEEZ ! I was hoping for a solid 10 on the friggin highway, especially because my roof was fairly light with gear this time, but it didnt happen.

I did have a head-wind and I maintained 90 mph virtually the entire tank, even up some pretty decent hills... but in the past I have always turned 11-12 under these same conditions on the exact same route.

Gee, I cant wait until I add 35`s and even MORE permanent gear :crybaby:

HMMM... LPG is sounding pretty good about now !

90 mph full loaded will do that

SIN- wow. If you weren't planning any wheeling on the trip, you may have been better off driving an RV with that kind of mileage- a lot more comfortable, too! ;)

My 80 loaded with 4 people and loaded expedition rack thru WV to Hilton Head @ 70mph, 10pg. Now the 100, 4 people, not loaded so far @ 70, 16.5.

Sounds like the possibility of a bit of bad gas in there to me. I had that happen on a road trip recently, coincidentally on the way to Hilton Head. It was a station in my hometown that I no longer buy from for that reason. I wanted to call and report them to have the tank/ gas inspected but I was headed out of town and didn't want the hassle. My mileage down was less than stellar and on the way back on fresh gas we were loaded down ALOT more and against the elevation change and netted much better MPG.

You should be able to get 8mpg in reverse!!!

Yeah, no doubt !

And I wouldnt have needed to set up that damn leaking tent of mine either

BTW.. I still felt like the king of the road in my 100 though

Leaky tent = no fun

Sheesh !
Tell me about it  !! I havent seam sealed the rain fly in years, and it was NOT supposed to rain up on Cedar Mountain this weekend ... That will teach me to ..

A = Maintain my damn camping equipmant more often

and

B = NEVER trust the weather report ( I know, I know, this one is a given ! )

Oh, as far as bad gas goes.... I filled up at a Sam`s club which has always proven to be good quality fuel for me, but I did notice a (seemingly) drop in power on this journey, so it is possible :frown:

Now the bad gas I got from those chili dogs is ANOTHER story  ( my poor tent mates ! )

SinCity,

Your truck probably weight at least 7000 pounds ... going 90mph with a roof rack .. but yet you still felt like "king of the road" .... there's gotta be a price for that :grinpimp:

Yeah, the price I paid was.... $3.39 A GALLON FOR :censor: PREMIUM FUEL !

Actually , I think I was closer to 8000 lbs ;p

I must say however...I still love the way other "SUV" drivers look in awe at the 100 as I pass them with ease :D ( or maybe it`s not awe, it`s more like... " look at that idiot driving so fast " ... :whoops:

Nah.. I know they are thinking " I gotta get me one of THOSE ! "

Sams's gas runs like complete crap in my 80, and this is the almighty 3FE runs good on 50/50 piss/gas 80. I don't save the extra 2-3 cents by using Shell/BP/Hess vs Sams, but my rig seems to like it better.

Sin, I think the 90mph plus roof rack is your mpg enemy! FYI: With the 4.88/35" MT/R's my mpg actually went up...up to 15mpg (from 13.5 mpg with 4.30/33" MT/R's) keeping it at or below 70mph. Added the RocketBox and the Horizon and it dropped to 12.5mpg fully loaded @ 65mph or below.

But if you really want low mpg to complain about (but huge grin factor that makes up for it) head off-road into the mountains in low & locked...better bring the extra gas cans

I guess I should be happy with pulling my 5000# boat (dry weight) and 3 people with all gear on a 5 hour excursion and averaged 11mpg via the computer? seems the computer is sometime a little generous.

Sounds like bad gas or maybe some E85 by mistake (check out Consumer Reports). Best to use TOPTIER gas. I have had erratic problems with Sams gas in the past - unexpected tanks of bad gas. Even with Toptier gas (see toptier.com) it is best to not get gas if the gas truck is on site filling the storage tanks.

At speeds over 70 the mpg falls rather rapidly, especially when adding added wind resistance on the roof (more so than the weight).

I agree, the 100 rides nice and feels solid even when loaded down on mountain roads. However, I usually do better than expected on mpg in the mountains. I expect it is because I usually drive under 70 mph - regardless of use/not use of overdrive.

Slow down... :)

90 mph is slowing down for me.. ;)

UPDATE:

Upon returning from my trip, my mileage on the final tank was an acceptable 11.4 mpg, and I actually ran slightly faster on the way back...I was however, approx 250 lbs lighter and the hills were much less of a factor.

I am (at least a litte bit) happier now

21+ US mpg fully loaded with gear and people.
Even towing a 33lbs trailer I still got 17mpg or so across I90 to Seattle (70 mph).

Gotta love diesel baby. :D :)
To bad I rolled it last thursday :(

Cheers,
NIck

There was this article I read a while back talking about the idea of a speed limit based on your momentum! So a little, light-weight car would have a higher speed limit than a loaded up 100 series Land Cruiser...

Wonder how that applies to a super bike?? :)
