Somebody pinch me!..

I guess I’ll start at the beginning. I bought my 1st Cruiser in 1989. An October ’77 FJ40. I co-founded the STLCA in 2001. I became a BOD member for the TLCA around 2005?. I built Zebranator I and II. I drew a bunch of cartoons for the Toyota Trails magazine over the years. BUT!.. While that was going on, the best thing happened.

In 1997, I bought my dream truck. With the search help of my good friend Gary Bjork, (RIP) I bought a ’66 FJ45 LWB from Oregon. Rust free! Well, one little spot, but that doesn’t count. It was an awesome truck. I only drove it once before pulling out the 327ci Chevy and preparing for the King of Beasts. I had a crate motor Dodge Ram 8.0L V10 sitting right beside it in my garage. I made an actual size cardboard copy of it and set it inside the frame. It was going to fit perfectly… with minor adjustments. Fast forward about one year and… I had to sell it. Back then, Cruisers weren’t worth nearly what they are now so I didn’t get a lot for it but it took it’s trip to Massachusetts.

It took quite a while but I eventually forgot about that truck for the most part. Honest. Oh, I remembered that I owned one but it wasn’t a thorn in my side anymore. I somehow ended up talking to Randy Elkin and drooled over his “custom FJ28 Troopy.” He mentioned that he knew where my old FJ45 was and that a friend (Paul) owned it. It was weird when he said that he was the second owner after me and neither one had done a single thing to it. “It sits just like you left it all those years ago.” That was in August of 2013. “I think he’d sell it even though it’s not up for sale.” I replied, “I wish.” and left it alone.

Then forward up to December, 2018. An opportunity came up that allowed me to try and find Paul. It took a few days searching and asking but finally found him. Well a little talking and he said he’d thought about selling but was worried about who would get it and not treat it right. He knew who I was and said he’d sell it to me. A side note: I’ve always said that Land Cruiser owners are generally the Best and his next words proved why.
“I’ll tell you what. I’ll sell you your old Cruiser for the price you sold it all those (20) years ago.” The only thing I’ve done is buy parts for the rebuild and I’m close to having everything.”
ARE YOU SERIOUS? I won’t give away what that price was to protect us both but man, oh man, how happy am I?

So here I stand. Ready for the next big build. I’m still making decisions on what to do with it but my first lean is toward restoring it. Or should I say, resurrecting it. We are just barely over an exact 20 years from the time it left Nashville to the trip back to Middle TN. The truck looks exactly like it did all those years ago. I made the (now I realize) mistake of rattle-canning it tan. I would’ve left it alone if it didn’t have grey primer on the side of the bed. I believe it was originally Coronado Beige. It doesn’t matter anyway, I’m changing the color and going all out on this rebuild. A sad note, it got left outside for maybe only a one of the 20 years but it rusted the perfect hard top. CRAP.

I thought this Cruiser was going to be a build I’d jump right into but STPCHLD jumped in my lap first. So I’ll have to wait a couple of months before I can really get a start on this one. We managed to thread time between snow storms in the east to get the truck from Boston to Mountain City, TN. Then the tow from there to Franklin on March 5th.

How clean a frame is that?

You know I'll be following this one, too. Super jealous! Sounds like you're planning to keep it, this time around? Any plans regarding what you'll be using as a powerplant this time around?

PS that cardboard cutout is almost so perfect it looks like it could run. 🤣

PPS - I notice the "Load Leveler" spring shocks - out of curiosity have you done much wheeling on those? My truck has them, the ride is harsh - and it seems like they'd be counterproductive off-road. Just curious if they'd be DANGEROUS off road (prone to tipping you over) or just uncomfortably springy and working against flex.

This truck came with tons of parts purchased over the last 20yrs. Those shocks are fun to look at but aren't part of the plan. You'll notice they've been on there for decades. As far as running them off road... You see above the only time that truck was off a 2 track when I had it last time. Seriously! I drove it out to JB's dad's farm for the guys to see it and then drove home and took it apart. I didn't try out the shocks personally.

I'd get a license plate that said: 2ND CHNZ [had to throw the Z in because of the zebranators]

HA!!! I love it! Only problem is I named the build I did 5 years ago, 2NDCHNC.

I've considered:
MINE2YC and 2YCOWND but settled on MY45AGN

Amazing set of circumstances. So great to hear it wasn't hacked up after all those years! Congratulations!

Thanks everybody.

I'm still a little foggy about how incredible this is. I've got lots of things to take care of like taxes and STPCHLD. But I'm unpacking all the stuff a little at a time. When I get it situated well enough to get a shot, I will. It's just another layer of WOW in this deal.

Well guys, I found a sad spot. The guy Ii sold it to apparently took the top off and set it back down in the grass... Then left it for a year. It's the only part of the truck that has cancer. Tons of it. The guy aughta be shot! (enough of that.)

Its safely in the barn now waiting it's turn. So just to let you guys watching this thread, it may go quiet for a month or two. So I leave here a few shot if it's new resting place for a little while.

Dig the lights. It’s like having its own barn dance. Just needs music. Check out Chicken Dinner Road. Literally, they’re great.

But that top is still cream puff. Literally. :p

The lights are left behind from my daughter's wedding 3 years ago. Coolest wedding I've ever attended. (My older daughter will never see this post.)

In that first shot of the last post:
Check out the dark blue doors. PERFECT early doors. No rust. Not to mention the 45 doors are just as nice.
Factory soft doors! Someone tried to paint the canvas.. :wtf:

The top just really bums me out. Why did he just ignore the top and waste it? He never drove it. A real Cruiser crime. The only part of the truck with cancer. You can read the news through it.

I have a 40 and a 45 I'd like to put tall and skinny tires on but I want to run stock steelies too. That being a 15" rim, what choices to I have for an aggressive (not Swampers aggressive) tire about 33" tall on the 15s? Am I too old for this equation in modern times?

MY45AGN has a set of 5 BFG 33x9.50/15s on it but they're old and one has a big slice in the sidewall with two plugs in it. (It currently is flat... go figure.)

I can pass the newspaper through my roof in two spots.

If you could take lots of pictures of the hard top repair when you do it I’d appreciate it. Mine suffers the same phenomenon - a weirdly rust-free tub with a super rusty top and doors.

I'm considering replacing the top with a new metal one. My tub and doors (and the top the last time I saw it) are solid. No cancer.

So sorry, I don't think I'll be tackling the sheet metal on this one.
