Sunday the 21st. Tore the T/C apart not what I wanted to see. Worn bearings and gears. Take a look at the pictures and chime in. It looks like the wear was caused by the output shaft bearings being worn out and letting the output shaft move around. Want some input. replace the gears and bearings source another T/C. What about changing to a FJ60 T/C? Are the ratios the same? It would do away with all the vacuum stuff. What do you think? thx matt

I think I would do a rebuild kit for the TC, and put a McNamara gear in there while your at it. Dont know much about the the 60 TCs as far as ratios go, so I am of no help there.

Pm sent about some parts... :hhmm:

I am following this one - mine is coming sooner than later, I hope!

there are a few engine swap threads on this forum for those who may not know...do a search for engine swap, vortec, 5.3, 5.7 or 6.0... Just an FYI.. probally give you guys some ideas of what others have done.

I thought the McNamara gear was for the output splines being messed up. It will be a Chevy L460E. Am I missing something here? matt

My point was, if you end up rebuilding you might just as well upgrade to the McNamara gear while you are at it - can't go wrong with it...

Rex,
thanks for the lead. I ended up knowing the owner and his wife from High School. Their Cruiser got wasted in an accident. Took out the T/C this morning. Not to bad it took a couple of hours.Looks alot better inside. One thing I did notice was something is not right with the idler thrust washer. It has a nice wear spot from the bearing. Could have been put together wrong. But I should be able to move forward.

later

The flash on the gears is normal from when they cut the gears. I asked Marlin about it when I put my ToyBox in. Replace the bearings and seals and run it. I would get a gasket kit from Toyota if you can. You shouldn't have to change the shim if you use Toyota gaskets.

Edit: if the gear in the blury pic is chipped replace it. I can't really tell from the pic. Call Marlin and see if he has one.

There was another link posted recently to antoher brand of engine mounts that looked pretty cool, but there are so many conversions threads, I can't find it.

I have the AA mounts in my truck and dislike them a lot. My engine swap is 9yrs old though and the mounts have seen better days.

I plan to re-do my mounts before to long. I am going to use some Chevy vulcanized leaf spring bushings or buy some more bling ones, like these...

Heavy Duty Toyota Motor Mounts, Ford, Chevy, GM Bolt-In Engine Mounts, Transfer Case Alignment Shims, Power Steering Kit, T-Case Mounting Plate

There are downsides to solid mounts as well FWIW.
Personally I think holding up for 9 years is not bad at all!
Easy to replace anyways...

There are downsides to just about anything! If all I needed was new rubber in my mounts that is all I would replace. Unfortunately, when whomever put in the engine 9yrs ago they welded the mounts in cooked. So I need new mounts, might as well make it better whle I am at it. ;)

The one gear is chipped so now I have an extra T/C for parts. It's kinda funny I was looking at the gears real close and the output gear from the trans in the new case is NG. You can see the splines are getting pointed in the middle and you should feel the slop on the output shaft. Will be moving forward after vacation :). Getting out of the heat and heading to the Central Calif. coast. later matt

Dan, Would you consider polyurethane a solid mount? I'm not sure what I'm doing for mounts yet. Who's using what? thx matt

I think it has more to do with the style of the mount, but I could be wrong.

In my opinion, its not worth the extra fabrication time thats involved with getting it right. AA mounts are easy... one less thing to do. Trust me there's already enough details in these swaps!

If you going to go through the trouble of getting better mounts.. use the OEM chevy mounts the engine came with and fab the part that welds to the frame...
I replaced my rubber mounts already after 3 years the rubber was gone...
I'll be checking the rubber after a year of usage as they dont seem to last much... vulcanized rubber would be a good choice....
Harder rubber mounts will transfer more engine vibes to the frame and you will feel it.. No biggie tho'.

Do this.

The AA mounts aren't that great. I used them.

And as for Polyurethane, I wouldn't go there, it's nice to have the damping of rubber in an engine mount that is for a non race car.
