Hey folks! Brand new here... if the subject has been broached before please excuse my ignorance. I have a '87 Wrangler planning an engine swap. Removing the tired 4.2 liter. Replacing with a 327 cid from a 68 Impala. Found a great deal on a SM420 so I picked that up. I do realize that it may be a bit more "log truck" than some would want... but that is what I want. Now my issue is I do not know much about any of this fun stuff. I need info on a transfer case. I have a friend who has three that have come out of 3 various GM trucks. I have access to a NP208c, a NP241c, a NP203 or of course I have the NP207 that is already in the Jeep. Want to do this the best way I can. Have no answers. So I figured I'd ask the pros.:) Which is gonna be the best to put on the tranny? Money being the heaviest problem I have. So needless to say I'd like to use one that I have that will do the duty. Please help. Thanks in advance!

Did you notice this forum is about landcruisers?

I find the split case from the FJ60 to be pretty good........

Hmmm, '87 wrangler.

I would suggest a 3fe (from an 80 series) engine with the split case TC. In between you could use the stock LC auto tranny or source an H55 (may need to be regeared for gas engine) 5 speed manual.

If you really want to complete the package, upgrade to FJ60 front and rear axles.

With this drive train it might be easier to find a 60 series frame so everything bolts right in. You would have to shorten it but after that only body mounts would need to customized to fit the wrangler body.

An even easier route might be to find a mid 80's 40 series chassis with body, the suggested drive train should fit with very little trouble and then just custom mount the wrangler fenders. You could probably get the wrangler grill in front of the LC radiator fairly easy as well.

Good luck with your project, and keep us up to date on this thread.
