It is under construction, largest road construction project in state history supposedly. I have the joy of driving through the middle of it every day.

Are y'all talking about the new I-22 or highway 78?
Jefferson County was the last county in the state to get interstate built because the county historically voted against Wallace and as punishment he made Jeff Co the last county to receive the interstate.
That has nothing to do with I-22 but is an interesting fact.

Eric, have yall catered a wedding yet?
I'm talking about the highway between B'ham and Memphis. Seems like its been going on for the last 6+ years. I know it wasn't far from complete when we came back from Colorado on our honeymoon 6 years ago. We shot out of Memphis on I-22 only to find out that it just dead-ended and we had to take neighborhood roads to find our way into B'ham and onto I-20.
Seems like it was a shovel ready project just waiting for someone to finish.
It's been that way for decades. Alabama decided that Memphis didn't really have anything they wanted.

I thought it was normal until I started dating Kait. I watched Tennessee build a rest area and Kentucky build an overpass. Start to finish in less than 2 years.

And I thought GA road crews were slow. Took them 18 months to widen the S. Atlanta Rd bridge over the Chattahoochee only to add dedicated bike lanes and a sidewalk (for what is, by no means, a pedestrian/cyclist laden highway).
