At this point I am mostly concerned about what happened because I dont want it to happen to mine. If there was one thing on that truck that should have been perfect it was the front axle.

In 50k miles it had been fully repacked twice. Bearings repacked two more times above that and then the bearings were replaced. Aisins were taken apart, cleaned up and resealed with new bolts and gaskets. Longfield wipers, which I am suspect of at this point, they might seal too well.

It is scary to see a bearing completely disintegrate when I can still remember packing and installing it. I never repacked mine after the fateful cahaba trip, I am scared to open them up now. Especially since I just had to tighten one side.

I'm not suspect of marlins seals, mainly because I've seen OEM seals fail... and it dawned on me, the bushings in the spindles were causing the play, and thus causing the seals to fail. So, CHECK YOUR SPINDLE BUSHINGS.

Also. The 18ft/lbs or whatever silly-ass torque spec on the dif nuts... yeah, that's NUTS! I went for years trying figure out how to keep my dif tight... then finally said F' it are started going to TIGHT as crap on them bolts... problem solved... I assume around 70ft/lbs... nothing cray cray.

Hey, previous owners, settle down. You're pissing in the wind if you're trying to piss further than me. It's my determination that the difs were both loose because it was holding the ENTIRE motor/tranny/xfer in place... my bet now is that both pinion bearings are SHOT. It's also my belief that is why both drive shafts are seemingly stuck.... but the evidence is that the dif was loose even when Keith got it. It's still leaking now. Obviously, the rear puked half a cup out of the pinion when I took the drive shaft off. They were holding an Entire drive train! They gone be loose regardless of 2 or 4 WD... My frustration isn't so much the truck condition more than the idea... it's not what I thought. It's my seventh 80 and honestly, I don't like a manual. The idea is cool. But it sucks in traffic, it sucks on the trail. I have only driven down a double track but I can already tell, it's lost why an 80 excels on the rocks. Only thing that MAY save this setup is a crawl box. But as it sits now, it's just a novelty. And in no way can I DD it with this lift on it. Hurts my feeble back to try to jump into it every time. At this point it's going to just take time to go through EVERYTHING... cause I don't trust a single thing on it at this point.

80s make awful DDs. they are all novelties.

Please. Let me drive that POS you have. So I can see why you hate so much. Cause I've never felt as comfortable and safe on a road than in an 80. The fact that the full-time 4WD hugs the road is a thing of beauty. Rain, snow, ice, whatever. I love it.

My truck is awesome but no 80 is a reasonable DD for an average person. The truck is designed around 35" tires and was built to drive in and over the worst terrain.

If I lived in Colorado and had wide open access to that world, I would probably consider keeping an 80.

you are welcome to drive it, without the tent, and the caster correction, drives awesome. Still wrecks my back though.

Lukes 80 was comfortable all the way to Colorado, but it had 100k miles and brand new leather seats. I like the driving position you get with leather. Still got 12mpg and since we weren't going over any technical terrain the benefits of an 80 weren't apparent.

There are numerous things I love about the 80 series, but its practicality isn't one of them.

"Nothing is right nor wrong. But thinking makes it so."

You're in the wrong place. But I'm beginning to think that's what you like about it.

Other than the MPG...I loved my Red Truck as a Daily. I drove it to ATL a couple times and it was great. Comfy all the way there and back. Comfortable, roomy, and people saw it and wanted to be in it...wait...dont know how to say that last part appropriately.

I have only ever ridden in a 100. Never driven one. But the ride spanked the 80.

I want a 40. Practicality doesn't even blip on the radar when thinking about it.

I just know I loved my 40. And I miss it. I thought I wanted an 80, because I had this idea of how it would do on road trips, I was wrong. It's still slow, gas guzzling tank.

If you are going to play, might as well do it in style. 2f 4speed. Ambulance doors vent windows. Manual steering. Manual windows. 8-track tape player. :greenpimp:

hunnerds do drive better. But not spanking them. I still say you're driving the wrong 80. Only letting me drive it will prove me otherwise.

Ron Paul must drive a 40.

I don't see my reply? anyway, come drive it.

100s only drive better because most 80s either have worn out suspension components or are running OME lifts (which suck).

I know that there is no way to sway your opinion but I do believe that you are simply wrong.
I think its because of your lack of experience (bad ones with other vehicles) that is causing this and the only way to remedy it is learn from your own mistakes.

I had a bronco that broke every single time I took it off road and several times in between the main problem was that it was woefully under built for the amount of power it had. I think that you will soon discover that is the case for most "off road" vehicles. Yes Eric breaks his rigs every time he hits the trails too but that is because he buys the cheapest ones he can find slaps a lift and tires on it then takes on the hardest obstacles in the state (No way could you do that in a Izusu).

I honestly have no Idea how hard it is to work on a Trooper but I would bet that it is much more difficult than a 80. That is the beauty of an 80 though; its the perfect combination of simplicity and refinement.
It is a nice comfortable ride that will get you home 99.9% of the time and really only require a small bag of tools to do it (Field Serviceable).

And Style? Style!!!??
I have had hard core 40 and 60 guys literally curse me while riding with me because of how smoothly and gracefully my 80 (with 285 bfg ats!!) would clear and obstacle. There is nothing more stylish than a family wagon that can creep 3ft rock ledges all day long and then comfortable take you 200 miles home.

You are sitting on a pot of gold and just to blind to see it. Stop bitching and start wrenching!! put some effort into it man.

Why dont you come buy my pot of gold?

I own too many and its not worth what you are asking for it.

I honestly dont know what you are talking about.

I havnt had any junk break, I am not selling it because it needs work/i cant work on it, what ever.

I dont wheel... I dont think its comfortable even going down the road. there is no tangible benefit in owning it over the other SUV I have chosen.

an 80 better be worlds more comfortable than a 40/60. it cost 3x as much and is 5-30 years newer. It was built as a luxury vehicle, 40s and 60s are utilitarian.

there is no part of me that wants to take on the hardest obstacles in the state. and eric breaking stuff has zero bearing on my decision to sell my truck.

It was not built as a luxury vehicle it was adapted for the us market.
When you say you don't wheel does that mean you have no desire to go to remote places?
If that's true then why consider 4wd SUV.
If you do have a desire to go to remote places then that's what I'm talking about I don't want to be stuck out in the middle of no where. With just a little know how the 80 will get you home.
I only mentioned Eric to show that is how far one would have to push a 80 to break it.

Aren't you already looking at replacing a CV joint in one of those Izusus.

.

So you hate the 80? Then sell the damn thing. And don't try to highball anyone either. Sell it. Be done with it. Tired of hearing you bash the s*** out of it. But in the next breath say it's "luxury" and not utilitarian.
You're wheeling with the wrong people if you think a 40 or 60 or any other cruiser can out shine an 80. Notice the IronPig guys... They're all pretty much wheeling body less 80's now. They'll bring a handful if them to events.

Notice the nightly news. There's 80's all over the world being used.

Don't go away mad, just go away.
