Removing all the bits and pieces blocking access to the IP. Throttle, intake manifold, oil and fuel filters, PS res, etc.

Most stuff removed... now have access to the pump

Timing belt removed...

Used a harmonic balancer puller thingy to push the IP out of the engine. Up on the bench, we replaced the small $0.30 o-ring that was causing the leak. While we had the pump out, we replaced all available seals including the top seal.

Me trying John's patience by asking if I need the pump in to drive the truck... :hillbilly:

Many hours later and one $0.30 seal...

New intake manifold gaskets while putting it all back together...

Nice job, I have to replace those seals and swap pumps over in the coming months.
May have to ask you a few questions.

For sure, anytime. You can also add me on Crackbook if you use that... easier to chat...

Next up: Double cardan. Well, the story behind that is, after I got the lift from Jason @ Cruisin Off Road, I had a driveline vibration coming from the front driveshaft. I was warned that with that size a lift it may happen and I may need a double cardan shaft to eliminate the vibration.

So I went into a local wrecker, asking for a rear shaft from a 1995 to 2004 Tacoma 4x4 (1st gen) as Jason said the flange would bolt right up, and the other end could be welded into my existing front shaft.

They sold me one, for a reasonable $50. I brought it home, took my front DS out, with the intent on going to the machine shop the next day and getting them to weld them together. When I was looking at the two shafts on the bench, I thought... why does the flange on the double cardan shaft look bigger than my stock 80 series flange??? Figured it was an optical illusion due to the larger joint itself.

Well, luckily I stuck the two together, and ran a couple bolts threw them. Turns out the double cardan flange WAS bigger. By about 2mm. Nearly the same size, but way too different to work. :censor::censor:

Called up the wrecker, politely asked if they had indeed given me what I had specifically asked for... followed by silence on the phone, and "Oh... no, we gave you a newer 4-runner shaft... I thought they were the same".

Glad I hadn't yet paid the machine shop to weld it to my shaft.

I went back into the wrecker and he swapped me for an ACTUAL tacoma shaft, which bolted up perfectly.

Brought the shafts into the local machine shop, that afternoon went and picked them up.

Bolted it to the truck, everything looked great. Put my skid plate back up, and took it for a test drive expecting perfection.

It was worse than before. WAY worse. It was so bad, my toolbox in the back was bouncing around with the vibe. :censor::censor::doh::censor::mad::mad:

I called the shop, they assured me it was straight and true, within 0.002... so I bought myself a dial gauge and measured. Laying on my back under the truck and running the front wheel (lifted in the air) like a hamster wheel, I measured 0.002 on one side of the weld and 0.0025 on the other. Ok... so it's straight. Well WTF? :hhmm:

Out came the DS again... then I noticed that the front ujoint (non double cardan end) was very, very stiff in one direction. Weird? It wasn't like that before the shop had it.

I replaced the front ujoint, and it was much better... though still had significant vibration. It was still stiff, too, in the one direction. John suggested perhaps the ears of the yoke were a bit squished. Now, not to BLAME the shop, but... it wasn't like that before.

John showed me how to stretch out the ears of the joint using 1/2 inch grade 8 fine threaded rod and grade 8 washers and nuts. I managed to get it to be silky smooth in both directions, bolted the DS back up (again... sigh) and... perfect! Drives nice and silky smooth now

Next up, Power steering pump rebuild.

The PS pump on my truck has slowly leaked since I bought it. The res. also leaked, but I replaced that a couple years back because it was easy. Now that I had access to a shop (mine!:D) I wanted to actually fix the leaky pump.

Plus, over the last year or so, it was getting harder and harder to steer. I'd have to idle up to get into a parallel parking spot. And the pump WINED... like a b*:censor:

Bought the 1HD-T power steering pump "rebuild" kit from Akella here on MUD, which came with all the necessary seals, gaskets, crush washers, the shaft, a bearing, etc. It was only missing the one special bearing that Toyota actually doesn't sell, a NK 17/16. I sourced that one from a local bearing shop, they brought it in from the USA for a grand total of $30. I've read here on MUD that that particular bearing was the cause of the wining noise these pumps get, so I wanted to be sure to replace it.

First difficulty was actually finding the damn bolts holding the pump to the engine. It had leaked for so long, the nuts on the studs were actually just lumps of dirt. Gross.

Got the pump out, then cleaned it up and opened it up. Removed the cam thingy, the vanes, etc, then got the gear puller and pulled the gear out. It was -very- much in there.

Then out came the gear, bearings, and shaft. Don't forget to save the key off the old shaft, it's needed for the new shaft. (lower right)

Replaced all bits, cleaned up all parts going back in with brake clean, greased up all new seals and re-assembled. Put back in the truck and manually got the atf flowing through it before turning it on.

Works perfectly:) No more wining. No more leaking.

Sounds very familiar. My frame rail is coated in diesel right now from a similar issue...I have some parts on the way to get that sorted. I also have a steering pump reseal kit waiting for warm weather. Nice update!

So you know that big 2-day snowstorm the interior (well, most parts of BC) had the other week? 42cm in 48 hours or something like that... well on day 2 we decided to go wheeling.

Love the purring kitten

News on the power steering pump rebuild... it's leaking again, and often difficult to turn the steering wheel.:( Not sure what I did wrong / or what's wrong. At the point buying a brand new pump isn't out of the question!

To add a picture to an otherwise boring update, here we are following the original Barkerville Gold Rush wagon road! Summer vaca adventures...

Nice cruiser and great thread. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! It's been awhile. Just got caught up to date. You've been busy. Nice videos also. Well I sold my cruiser in late 2012 and it's never been the same since. I've actually drove to your neck of the woods in 2013/2014 for family trips. I was driving my Toyota. I now have a 1998 4Runner that has a 01-04 Tacoma front clip conversion, small lift, yada, yada, yada. Next time I'm up there we gotta plan something. Your truck is still the favorite! Aloha and Happy Holidays!
