Just to revive my rant and respond to the responses. I have no love of the domestics, just concerned about the affect on the economy, people and their families, and the future of four wheeling. I agree that their quality isn't there, especially over the long term. However, the truck lines seem to be better than the cars. Toyota bought back a ton of Tacomas for 150% of book due to quality, so they aren't immune to producing a POS on occasion either. They all went to the crusher rather than being parted out.
At this point it appears that the only thing left from Chrysler will be the Jeep brand and it will be owned by Fiat. The only thing left from GM will be Chevy and Cadillac. At least Ford had the good sense not to take bailout money.
The crisis in the auto industry, which includes the imports, came to fruition with $4 gas and $5 diesel fuel. Then the economy hit the wall in September. Even though fuel prices are down, nobody is buying the guzzlers we like to drive and even the Prius is now on the lot with a rebate. The FJ Cruiser will go away after 2010. Vehicle sales in the 15 million units per year range have dropped to less than 10MM and expected to stay there.
The 2011 model vehicles will be out in 12-18 months. The new CAFE standards are just over 30 MPG for a car and just over 24 MPG for a truck. Sounds like a good idea, but what does that vehicle look like? Not many 4WD trucks get 18, never mind 24. You can bet there will be less selection. How long can you keep your DD on the road before replacing it with something new? I hope that replacement is what you really want.
We can anticipate a big increase gas taxes before then and I wouldn't be surprised if the crusher programs come back into vogue in an effort to get the gross polluting gas guzzlers off the roads. Don't think that our trucks will be immune.
I just want folks to be aware, or is that beware?
When I was standing next to that hemi-powered Challenger the other day, I wasn't thinking about articulation ;>)
All Jason needs to do is remove the house on top of the foundation except for the floor over the basement. Then bull doze four feet of dirt over that. That will be a nice bunker. Up here and in VT and ME they call that a house, so he'll never notice the difference.
BTW, Gary R's syrup is the best! How much did you finally make? I heard that the ice storm damage in December hurt production.
On another sad note, the gas tank in my '78 FJ40 has a slow bleed. I'm pretty happy it didn't start when fuel was $4.09 per, but it is making a mess of the garage and asphalt in the driveway. I managed to siphon out most of the recent fillup and shut the power off to the garage in case the compressor decided to fire up on its own. Anyone out there have a decent tank to sell, a source for repair, or a cheap source for replacement? it's a good excuse to remove the seats and install the Aussie 4 speed at the same time.

LCCruiser, your first rant I pretty much disagree with everything you wrote and the second rant was just more of the same.
A couple of things.
Tacoma frames was do to a supplier (DANA) not meeting design specs, that is not on Toyota as far as I'm concerned. But they did do the right thing in responce to the situation AFAIC.
The new cafe regulations are driving the auto industry toward diesels, so we'll just have to get used to that. 80 series diesels have been getting 28mpg since the beginning and they are a 6000lb truck.
I find your continued assertion that GM and Chrysler are responsible for providing us the access we have for our sport to be insulting toward the men and women who work tirelessly at getting and keeping that access.

I don't see why they should save GMC. Are GMC trucks not a polished copy of Chevy...just like Pontiacs are polished copies of Chevy as well?
