It'll be a sad day if the American manufacturers go belly up. Might as well stop eating Apple Pie. You can blame the manufacturers, the unions or whatever. The American car/truck has been numero uno for a century. The marque we pay homage to is dependent on many of the same suppliers for its US manufaturing as the domestics. Much as I dislike Jeep, I can't see them being made in Italy. Jeep helped win the big one, WWII, and now its ownership is going to be Italian? Fiat was downgraded to junk bond status based on the news because Chrysler is such a bad investment. MB was smart to divest itself a couple years ago. I wish Ford or GM would pick up the Jeep, but not likely at GM since they are axing Hummer. Like 'em or hate 'em, all those Jeep and Hummer owners who go offroad help the sport and our ACCESS. There's strength in numbers and the numbers could soon be declining exponentially if we lose those brands, especially Jeep. The government is on a mission to dictate what you drive in the very near future and restrict our access. Don't believe it? Take note of the fact that the government's survival plan for GM includes eliminating the majority of the GM models that actually make a profit. They are SUV's and trucks. We are all in this together. Buy American if you can and don't worry about the warrantee, the government has already said it would back them up. Think about your last couple encounters with a government entity. Was it DMV, the Post Office, permit for home improvements, customs, town clerk, IRS? Is that what you want to put your faith into? No disrepect to the government employees, but I don't want to deal with the bureaucracy. I'd be first in line for that Challenger, Camaro, Corvette or GTO, or Shelby if I had the dough. They will soon be collector's items and will bring big mone at barrett's in a few years. Just be sure to buy the top dawg of the brand. It's a good bet!

I don't know Dave...$100 extra per month, plus the extra gas...that's going to add up.

LC- I think the only brand that will truly survive is Jeep. Someone will buy that brand and keep it going

This is all just dream-shopping guys, no worries. I really like my current car and have no good reason to replace it. I wouldn't want to eat into my Cruiser funds for a more expensive car and it's more expensive running costs anyway.

On GM, it will survive. The Gov't is going to float them while they go through Chapter 11 and make some serious restructuring changes.

Now, on the G8, not sure if you guys are aware that this isn't some run of the mill GM car. It's a a rebadged Holden Commodore from Australia. RWD, 365hp V8, big brakes, sticky tires, killer interior. This car is the basis for the new Camaro in fact. It's also going to be the basis for the next-generation Impala. Get the GXP version and you can even get a manual trans and the 400+hp V8 From the Corvette. It's a special car, and if GM comes out of the other side of this, a used one is going to be a real sleeper performance bargain.

I agree though, right now, it's too risky.

My main problem with GM is that their interiors are horrible. Everything feels like very cheap plastic and there's no aesthetic value to them. My mother only buys GM and has a Grand Am GT right now. Interior looks like Homer Simpson designed it. The outside design is an eyesore and the body panel gaps are huge....it whistles down the highway.

I'm not opposed to buying American if there was an interesting car to buy. I rent cars every month and always try to get a different model and I've never had a US car that I would think about buying except a Cadillac.

Scion did a great job. love them or hate them, they captured people's imagination and came up with some unique concepts. GM does concepts at their auto shows then puts out the same crap with different body panels every year. A Chevy Impala has to be the farthest thing from "The Heartbeat of America" GM needs to re-vamp their designs and start from scratch....not the platform designs but the aesthetic feel of their company. It's the most bland crap on the panet.

Until they get people fired up and inspired, nothing's going to work.

I agree with you John. I saw the picture that Dave posted and thought to myself.. Meh. Doesn’t do a damn thing for me. If I want fast I will go drop a V8 into a Miata. I think that the problem with the US auto makers is that their old diehard buy America base is getting older and the new generation has no problem buying a foreign car. I think that they need to come out with better styles and reliability. This will be difficult on top if trying to save the companies. They need to listen to their consumers.

I used be a huge Chevy fan. I’ve had a 73 Covette sitting in my parents garage for the past 15 years that I figure I will get to just in time for a mid life crisis. But I am sold on Toyota’s. My first experience is my parents first Corolla which they bought new back in 89. My parents never mainainted it. It was lucky is it got an oil change ever 10-15k. My brother and I both learned to drive on. When I got handed down to me I beat it like it owed me money. It never needed anything other than a couple of mufflers and a clutch in 225k miles.

After I got rid of it I got an S-10 4x4. I had to replace all the suspension part and it had major issued after I took it wheeling. I later got my first Toyota 4x4 and beat the snot out of it and never had problems with it. I am sold on Toyotas. My family drives Toyotas. I am going to have to have one hell of a lemon and of a Toyota for me to change my mind. Heck they even bought back my 11 year old truck for twice what I paid for it 5 years earlier.

I don't know much, but I think Toyota is going to far with introducing too many similar models. Think about it...Rav4, Highlander, Venza, 4Runner, and finally...the LC.

My point, this is what I think the others did, lets face it, too many GM models had sister cars Chevy or Pontiac, and Buick, all share too many platforms. Even in the early 70's the Chevelle, Cutlass, and Skylark were basically the same car!

Chevy will live...and maybe Buick and or Cadilac, but not sure on the rest. Isn't the G8 the new 4door GTO?

Chrysler has a couple nice models, but ...

Jeep, too many similar models (patriot, compass, cherokee...)...and the new TJ or YJ or what ever it's called, looks awful.

Best case, Chevy, Jeep, and some Chrysler/Dodge will live (maybe under one roof, but more concentrated on one model per niche.

What makes me the most uncomfortable is...all these promises being made sound like 15 year old boy telling his girlfriend that he'll love her forever if she sleeps with him...and we all know how most of those stories go. The Gov can make promises, but the next administration can cancel them all.

To go back to the top...Toyota needs to keep the Rav, and the LC, but needs to drop 2, or combine all the best in the middle 3 and come out with ONE vehicle to fill the niche between the Rav and the LC.

Just my 0.02

I agree with you on the excessive number of models Toyota has but if they weren't all selling then they would drop one or two. Somebody out there sees the subtle differences and there apparently is a niche market for each of these models.

I think Toyota does true market research where GM throws stuff out to see what will stick.

Considering the Jeep brand has killed more manufaturers than any other moniker I can't imaginge anyone wanting it.

What if Toyota came out with a re-issued FJ40 body style to compete with the Jeep? The Toyota reliability factor could kill the Jeep or at least weaken it vastly.

Toyota is ditching one of it's SUV's from what I've heard. It's the FJCruiser.

It's kind of hard pointing at Toyota and stating they are doing something wrong since they are the most profitable car company on the planet.

Yes they are, and for good reason, but, so was GM at one point in time.

They are more profitable based on being a better run business without 60 years of UAW legacy costs dragging them down. BUT they are still loosing billions right now, just like everyone else. Difference is, they can sweat it out with their massive cash reserves.

March sales numbers just came out...

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported month-end sales of 132,802 vehicles, a decrease of 36.6 percent from last March, on a daily selling rate basis.

in times like this, being the guy who is loosing the least still makes you the most profitable.

I'll wager 100.00 right now that at the end of 2009 the Camry will still be the best selling car in it's class.
