My 40 will not start! It has been running fine and now it does not do a damn thing. Alex came over and he could not find anything wrong with it. We got it pushed up on my car trailer and I towed it to Baldrees waiting for some news.

This sucks wanted to drive it to work this week.

Check the ignitor, cap and rotor - any spark?

Does it crank but not start?

Ive seen a lot of late 70's FJ40's disabled from bad ignitors. Easiest way to fix test it is to try another ignitor. Anyone around you have a similar truck?

Of course, there are many other things it could be. Do your standard diagnostics. Fire, Fuel and Air. Do you have spark? Do you Fuel? Is there a vacuum leak or lack of compression? A good friends 40 was disabled once when his manifold came loose and developed a huge vacuum leak. Check all of the basics.

I'd carry one in the glovebox or get rid of it and do an early distributor with a Petronix and coil (and then carry a spare petronix and coil :) ) But that is just how I roll....you could also carry spare points vs the spare Petronix.

When you says it does nothing you mean no click?? no turning over? or it cranks and just won't start?

Does it have spark???

Took it to a shop already?! Meatballs usually try harder than that!! Haha

Oh man.

You invite a bunch of cruiserheads to your house for a party and NOT expect us to mess with your truck?!?

Check the coil wire at the dizzy before Gary charges you anything, LMAO.

CONGRATS once again my friend!!!

Johnny something else is wrong with it. Gary called said his guys checked all the wires and the coil. They are at a loss. Guess its going to Drains.

John I drive my 40 a couple of times a week and I drive it in the winter topless and doorless in like u bunch of pansies!

Don't they say that frequent, short trips are bad for an engine? Must be hard to get it up to temp with no doors and top in the middle of winter! Nothing to keep the heat in!

If it's Johnny's fault, can I be there when either you punch him or he writes you a check for the repair?

No way. What do you mean by "check"? Did they just look at it or actually disconnect and reconnect the cable? We put the coil wire on the dizzy just enough so it wouldn't fall off, but not enough that it would make a connection.

That's the only thing that was changed.

I peed in the gas tank a couple times.

who is Drains?

Just talked to Gary - they swapped in the dizzy from the FJ60... nothing. Then the igniter, and it fires up. Tried new igniter w/ original dizzy.... nada. Dizzy and igniter are bad. Could get costly. Glad I wasn't in on the prank - for once I was an innocent bystander.

You have got to be kidding me.

I feel like s*** about this Adam. It was supposed to be a simple prank...

I just ordered a new igniter from Fred Anderson along with a dizzy from Marshall. Sucks that I just sold the dizzy out of Moonshine two weeks ago :frown:

Everything is being shipped to Gary's shop and should be there by Thursday. This is the last time I play a prank on a 30 year old truck :frown:

I was just reading about this... seems if the coil wire was close enough to arc, but not making a good connection, it introduces high impedence into the circuit. Can fry the ignitor and in turn, burn the rotor on the dizzy. Maybe Gary will let you use his ignitor & dizzy till the parts come in.

Good of you to do that Johnny - I'd pitch in on the parts, but since I wasn't involved directly....

I took a look at it, and it looked good, no signs of arcing or anything. Didn't really have the time to tear into it when I stopped over:meh: Good you found the problem.

Just swap in an HEI distributor and call it good;)
