Hey all,
I just wanted to put up an open invitation to everyone to join the So. Cal. TLCA for thanksgiving at Truckhaven Hills. We pretty much go there every Thanksgiving and have a great time. Plus, the terrain covers every level from mild to nutty. It's a great place to wheel wagons as well as short wheel bases. Anyway, it would be really great to get us all together...as they say the more the merrier. If you're not familiar with Truckhaven Hills, its about 30 miles south of the 10 freeway just across the highway from the Salton Sea. Most people show up on Friday but occasionally some come earlier to claim a camping area. So start thinking about it and join the fun.

Rich

P.S. We usually try to do pot luck with leftovers from Thanksgiving...I'm bringin' pumpkin pies!

Rich:

Go to hear from you, missing you at the Big Bear run. I will be just around the corner in Ocotillo Wells getting my dirt bike fix. We usually camp near poll line so it might be an easy ride over there. Where do you guys usually camp?

Tare

Yep - it's a blast out there unless it's so damn windy that you can't even pitch a tent! Right Otis? hehehe

We usually camp around the right side of the hill where the road splits. If you go leftish/straight the road goes to one of the main washes. We go right and follow the road around and try to camp near the little hill in back. That way we can shoot potatoes and mess around on whatever other vehicles we bring. Hopefully this year will be a calm wind year...you just never know. Sometimes its great and sometimes not. Either way we always have fun. The exploring/wheeling is always a blast and we usualy go out Friday night and goof around. Two years ago I took the 80 out at night and had a great time leading the rest of the group. For the most part it's pretty low key. I have to say it would be extreamly cool to have a bunch of 80's out there!

Rich

who needs a tent when you have an 80? just another perk of a wagon. I think I am going to sleep in the 80 at SNT this year - the pregnant wife's preference ;) . Now I just have to figure out a way to keep bugs out with the windows down. I don't want to be too redneck---but I ain't skeerd to be.

Smit

Smitty - agreed. I can sleep in the cruiser now. She was almost bone stock the last time I was out there two years ago. I think I had the Kaymar on, but that would have been it.

you guys don't all have a CTT by now?

:D

The trails at Truckhaven range from two-wheel-drive to fairly tough. We usually try a variety of stuff. The thing is, we never leave anyone behind and if a section is too much for someone there's always a way around. I've wheeled my 80 as well as my 40 and even a full size GMC Jimmy out there. It's all good. In fact one of the years a member of the club ran around all day in his Baja bug...he only had to be strapped once and that was by hand. Come on out, it really is a fun place to camp and wheel.

Rich

Can I have more details about this run? Is it only Friday or Saturday? If overnight, how can I get the camp site? This could be my first run in my 80. Details please. I need them to convince my wife to bring my kids along.

Thanks,

Vincent

I have never stayed in a camp site out there and the only one I know of is over by Ocatillo Wells by the big sand dune. I have always just pulled off of S22 at peg leg and pitched a tent in the desert.
It is a perfect place to offroad with the family. Lot's of washes to cruiz thru....

Thanks for the invite Rich. I will be at a obligatory family gathering in town. Hope the wheeling is great and the wind is non-existant.

Vincent,
Most of us go out there on Friday, camp out through Sunday and then cruise home. Some people have pulled the one day blast and wheel trip on Saturday but that's a lot of driving. I'm going to do the normal Fri. to Sunday thing. If we get to camp in our typical spot, then we're not too hard to find. We should have our So Cal TLCA banner out to help locate. Also, we try to leave our radios on to channel 4 or 14. The best way is to hook up and just drive out with someone. I'm figuring on leaving fairly early Friday to beat the traffic. Most likely I'll be towing my 40 with my 80 so I won't be going too fast. If that's ok with you then you're welcome to join the caravan. The other thing is we have a meeting on November 11th (I think...if that is a Sunday) at Hamburger Express, Westminster Blvd at 5:00 pm. Come on by and get some more details.

The area is about 30 miles south of I 10 on highway 86. From the 10 you travel south along the Salton Sea until you reach N. Marina Drive. You turn right on N. Marina Drive and go toward the desert (Salton Sea at your back). The paved road will give way to a dirt road that splits when you reach a small hill. We usually turn right and follow the road around to the back side of the small set of hills. Typically, we camp to the left of the road near the base of those hills. I am going to try and get our So. Cal. TLCA banner to bring out there. Although, I'm not going out until Friday. We are having our club meeting this Sunday, so we can find out who is going out and when.

Shamless plug: Come to the So. Cal. TLCA meeting Sunday, Nov. 12th, Hamburger Express on Westminster Blvd at Bolsa Chica. 5:00 pm...Hope some folks can make it!

Rich

P.S. It is motorhome friendly.

I would be coming from San Diego via the S22.
Not sure what you are talking about with Marine Drive.
It looks like to me that "you" would take the 10 to the Hwy 86 and make a right onto S22 (Borrego - Salton Seaway). And TruckHaven is around mile marker 37.

By the way if you are interested in an Anza-Borrego Map I had a buddy pick it up for me but you can get it at http://www.wildernesspress.com/book175.htm

N. Marina Dr. is about 1 mile north of Borrego-Salton Seaway off of Highway 86. Maybe this map will help:

http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...92,-115.995584&spn=0.022169,0.044417&t=h&om=1

The map shows N. Marina going all the way through to Borrego-Salton Seaway but I am not sure that it does (or it is dirt). I think that the point where Rich notes that the road splits shows up as a southward bend. Here is a link to a topo map that shows the approximate location with lat. and long. of the site:

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=33.29034&lon=-116.00462&datum=nad27&u=4&layer=DRG&size=l&s=24

Hopefully, this helps!
