I had something like that in my chevy 283. I cut it out w/ the sawzall and filled the hole the rod left with some JB Weld. I think it's designed to warm the engine up faster by staying closed until it's all warmed up.

I thought it was for reburning the exhaust. Connected to the rod is subposed to be a baffle. one side of my baffle was broke off and floating around in the cavity. At the end of the rod, (opposite the spring), where it came out the side there was a nasty exhaust leak. I filed a washer so the ID was a tad smaller than the rod dia. and ponded it on to stop the leak. Seems to be working.

Never used the JB weld stuff...Is it good for high temp's?

D'Animal, I guess I'd tell you the same thing we tell everyone who buys our Headers; PAINT ALL FOUR SURFACES WITH COPPERCOAT!!! Head, Manifold, and both sides of the gasket. Coppercoat is a head gasket adhesive that is copper in color, has small flakes of copper in it, is laquer based and bakes-on with heat.It does a great job of filling-in nooks and crannies, seems to work much better than double gasketing. Do not use the spray-on, it runs off like water. Use the can with the paint brush lid.

Thanks!

That is what I used this time for the fnal assembly. That and factory Toyota Gaskets.
