Hey all,
I have a weird kwerk that I would like to lay on you...
I replaced the thermostat in the rig prior to my Death Valley trip. On the way down, I noticed ONCE, that the temp gauge would peg, then come back down...
While wheeling in DV, it would peg and stay up...Id freak, turn the rig off check things out and there were no signs of over heating...Fire it back up and the temp gauge would be back to normal after a minute or 2.
When this happens, I also noticed that the fuel gauge also PEGS...
Anyone know what is happening here, or have a similar experience.
After a while, I just ignored it without any ill effects and she ran fine. It just really FREAKS ME OUT when this happens.
I suspect its an electrical problem, but I have NO IDEA!

I have the same issue with my 89 FJ62. I haven't taken the time to look too closely at it, but I was leaning towards a bad ground. I'll watching here for an answer.

This is a well known toyota quirk that happens a lot in 60 and 70 series. You can cure it bay cleaning the grounds of the instrument panels.
Or just ignore it. It makes for a good adrenalin shock once in a while :D

I freaked out the first time it happened... Then I just got used to it.

But, mine never stuck in the red for more than 15 seconds or so......... but as long as your fuel gauge pegs as well, your fine........

probably!

This is a common problem with FJ62's. It's not a ground, it's a set of contacts behind the fuel gauge that you need to clean. The contacts are actually a small voltage regulator and eventually they get a bit of corrosion on them and don't make contact, and the gauges spike. Search here on MUD, there was a thread on this awhile ago, I posted a long detailed description of how to fix it, with photos.

It's also archived in the Files section of the 3FE Yahoo List.

you are of course correct.
I meant to say clean the contacts, not only the grounds.
thanks!

AWSOME!
Thanks a LOT gentlemen...I really appreciate it. I about crapped my pants when I was mid- climb on a sketchy run, and i looked down and the temp gauge was BEYOND the red:eek: . I turned on the heater full blast in the 90 degree Death Valley heat!
I didint know what the hell was going on till I noticed that the fuel gauge was pegged too, with a half a tank in. I then figured it was probably something electrical.

Thanks again,

Chicago
