G'day, I have been reading through your posts in this forum as I also am having difficulty with what I thought was going to be a straight forward process with Techstream and Mini VCI cabling to my 2010 KDJ150. Interestingly, I have all the gear and it appears no idea!! I am having trouble with Techstream/VCI reading the ECU and I have narrowed it down to driver issues...I believe? When I load every thing up and it begins to communicate with the ECU it throws a code on the laptop "S301-23 Communication error with engine ECU, please confirm that engine ECU is properly installed". (Please see attached images).
Further to my conundrum I have plugged into a '2016 VDJ79 and it is happy to go through the process with no issue. I noticed there is some discussion about the 1GD engine and the necessity of Version 2.0.4, I have Version 1.4.1 which I along with many others have purchased from eBay. Is there a patch or firmware update I need to make it work?
I look forward to your feedback.
Cheers,
D.

Could it be a bad cable or OBDII plug?
Do you know anyone that'll let you borrow theirs?
OR, do you have another Toyota vehicle you can try your TechStream on to be sure it's not just your vehicle but perhaps TechStream or your computer?
Is TechStream working properly, e.g.: correct operating system, correct version, loaded properly?
Another idea is remove TechStream from your computer and reload it.
As an R&D engineer, I'm used to looking at every possibility for error. Try everything you can to trouble shoot.
