What time are y'all thinkin? Is this a 100 series u will be doing?

I'm thinking of showing up at about 7:30-8:00

FJ40. This one:

Yes, that 40, but not THERE. LOL.

I'll be there around 8am probably.

Current count by my math is 8 people including Luis.

So here's what he should have:

Rebuild/setup kits for front and rear
Rear ARB
Gaskets/seals for front axle
Real axle seals ???
Gear oil (6 quarts)
Permatex "The Right Stuff" Grey for the diff gaskets

Luis just let me know he got the ARB and the rear master kit. The front kit is just the pinion spacer and shims along with paint - he's confident the bearings don't need to be changed.

I'll check and see if he's got the gasket kits. I'm pretty sure he does - he's done this a few times. If not, I know I do. You should always replace the rear seals for sure - especially when you have damage to a 3rd, as you don't know how much the axle might have moved and possibly damaged that seal.

You mention Permatex - this isn't what I'm used to for an 80. With 80's, we use OEM paper gaskets. Is that different for the 40's?

And gear oil... cheap, cheap, cheap for the break in period. You're gonna need to drain it and inspect the plug for any kind of shavings after the first few hundred miles, at which point you can refill them with whatever oil you might be used to running. I usually look for deals at Autozone on their generic brand for this kind of job.

Makes sense on the rear seals.

And you are correct on the from diff, it's part-time so there is probably little wear on those.
The 80 front axle gaskets and seals aren't ALL the same, a couple are though. The 60 and 40 stuff is, and j have a 60 knuckle kit that I keep in the truck we can cannibalize if needed. I think Luis has a supply of
That stuff though.

As for the gaskets for the Diff to the Housing, you are correct, the OEM setup on every Land Cruiser is a paper gasket, however I elect to not use it in favor of silicon only. This was at the instruction of Georg. It works really well, in fact I removed the diff and reinstalled on the trail without touching the silicon and it didn't leak (for two months, I wouldn't recommend this).

It is a little funny how Toyota uses paper sometimes (diffs), and FIPG in others (transfer case) even tho it's dealing with the same kinds of materials and oils.

I just got a coupon for $20 off $50 from Advanced, so I got a 5 gallon bucket of gear oil for $39. Not bad :) I'll bring it.

Yup! Looking forward to seeing everyone and getting my hands dirty!

Well that was fun!

Good seeing everyone that turned up - good meeting a few new faces as well!

As for the job... well...

Got the new gears setup perfectly - but not before:

1) Building a jig to hold the carrier so we could torque the ring gear bolts

2) Building another "special tool" to move the carrier races

3) Me giving bad advice on a number of occasions

We also learned a few new things. Like 4.88's don't like ARB's in a 40 rear end... maybe front, too. You can't get the pin out to set the clips without grinding one of the teeth on the ring.

Nothing like getting nice metal shavings in your perfectly setup 3rd... ugh.

Unfortunately about that time it was time for me to go, and I was the last man standing beside Luis.

If anyone else took pictures, post them please. I'll send some up in a bit...

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Please don't mix gear oil and peanut oil. Results are less than appealing.
