Talk me out of a 5th gen Runner

We have both as well, wife has the 4runner for a daily. It has been rock solid for us, 100 is more robust and tank like while the 4runner is more agile. Really can't go wrong with a Toyota in general but really comes down to how much you want to spend and how you are going to use it in the long run.

To help this age old question along and for the folks that have no idea why one is bigger than the other, @ga12r1, can you explain why your unit is much bigger than the other?

I think that's kind of something to keep between Lee and his wife. :giggle:

It's the service life for each vehicle. The LC is built using a much longer service life, hence more robust parts. Additionally, it's a much larger and heavier vehicle, the components need to be up to simply being heavier duty.

I am pretty familiar with both vehicles, as i've owned 3 100 series and my brother has a 5th gen that i drove for a bit and let me tell you, the ergonomics of the 4Runner is just plain weird, the seating position, i never got used to it, can't imagine driving for long distance without hurting my back. The 100 i can drive to the moon and back and still be fine. Also the power delivery of the 4runner is not as smooth, i dont know if it's faster than my 100, but it didn't feel that way to me. You'd have to really get on it to get it to move, this is in stock form, i can't imagine loading it up and driving it.

Everything is beefier on the 100, take the knuckle off and you'll see what i mean, i almost crapped my pants when i had to remove that to do my axles. The suspension in my LX is like riding on a cloud, and the truck is so smooth and quiet i can hear queefs when someone uncross their legs. Offroad, they're both very capable, not sure why some people say the 4runner is smaller and should do better on trails, they're pretty much the exact same length and width, the 4gens are narrower and nimbler. 4th gen 4.7 V8 > 5th gen any day.

I see 100 series maybe once a week, i see 4runners on the road 5-6x a day, they're like jeeps, everywhere. They sure do look good when decked out with the right mods however, i love the way they look, much more modern, but it's not for me.

This is hot

It really boils down to if you want to hear the queefs of your passengers. If so, 4Runner is your piece. If not, go LC/LX.

All about the weight and mpg's. 100s and 200s are heavy.

For me, I don't care about the mpgs, all the other pro's out weigh the fuel consumption. I have issue with overall range, which is why I'm considering the long range/aux tanks that are becoming more prevelant, especially for the '03+ models.

Same. I live in a town of 5,000 people, a tank of gas lasts me 2-3 months.

I actually own a 2017 TRD Offroad Premium (Bilstein 6112/5160, SPC UCAs, Wheelers T13 springs, K9 rack, National Luna AUX battery system, Pioneer NEX 8400 in-dash nav with wireless Carplay/Android) and I just bought a VERY well maintained 2006 LC with 198k so I have a unique perspective: I own both.

I LOVE the additional power of the LC. I just rented a 12" chipper and the LC towed it like a boss.
I HATE the fuel efficiency of the LC. I get 12-13 MPG in the LC and 17 MPG in the 4Runner
The LC must have updated entertainment/electronics to not feel insanely dated...

The idea was to get the LC and set it up as my daily driver. I am stuck at the intersection of dump AHC vs refurbish AHC. I actually love AHC but I am close to needing to switch out for new globes/accumulators and it is a very hard choice. The AHC system is awesome...

Anyway, I am stuck trying to figure out if I want to keep the 4Runner (that is built perfectly and a great daily driver) or keeping (and sinking $5k) into the LC.

My logical brain says the 4Runner is a no-brainer; it's built, it has modern electronics. My dumb brain says the LC has more soul...

My problem exactly. Shut up logical brain!

The 4runner is great but it has no soul.

if you buy a 100 forget about MPG

Wife has 12 T4R limited. I dd an 03 100 with 240k miles. She prefers hers and I prefer mine. 100 is much more solid. The seats in the 4Runner blow. They are hard and the leather is not supple at all like the leather in the 100, but that seems to be the trend now in most vehicles. Honestly, I wish I could buy a brand new 100 and drive it for 20 years.

I dd my 100 and save my 200 for road trips and family duty on the weekends for that reason! I want the 200 to last forever. Both of my kids will have 100’s that we keep in the family for that reason. You can not kill them.

My 62 series will always be king though, with the 5 speed conversion!

Buy the 100 and keep it for life!

If it was up to my emotional brain only I'd end up with a 60 too!
