It's been a while since I've seen a 24V "evil center tap" headlight post on here. I'm working on an 81. I solved part of my problem by buying LED headlight that work with both 12/24v. I'm just about ready to wire my own system but thought I'd take one last crack at fixing the stock one. I checked the voltage on both sides for every wire. I will label it as it shows on the connector. ground, "Pass" (which is top post or low beams) and "drive" (which from the back on the RH side is high beams) for each wire each side high and low beam. Here's what I found with mine so far:
RH side: ground (black red) low 12V high 12v, Pass: (red/green): low 24V high 0V. Drive: (red/yellow): Low 12V high 24V.
LH side: ground (black/white) low 0V high: 0V. Pass (green/red): 10.4V high: 0V Drive: (Yellow/red) low: 0V high: 12V
Both lights work on high beam. Only RH side works on low, 10.4V isn't enough to turn the lights on for the LH side. Why would I only be getting 10.4V on the LH low beams? Why do I have 12V from the RH high beam wire when lights are on low?
This lead me to the dimmer relay. I took it apart to see if I could clean it up expecting to find a smoking gun. It looks very clean inside but The first thing I noticed was two sets of contact points, 4 total. One set looked to have a much bigger gap than the other set. One side is .023 other side is about .035. Does this seem right to someone else that's seen that before? The arms on the bottom of the contact points even look bent like someone was in here already.
