Risk is that interesting assessment which probability is not the only factor. The cost of what you can lose is just as important, sometimes more important, than probability.
The value of life far outweighs prejudice against tools that have proven to protect life, even when the probability of needing said tool is low.
Many of us have. A gun is a tool, nothing more. You either have access to the tools you need to complete your task, or you don't. Success of completing that task without the proper tools will vary.
As far as having a shotgun (truck gun) in the tailgate, anyone that has ever had a truck gun knows speed of deployment is not the primary goal. That is what your sidearm is for, and that should be on your person at all times possible. A truck gun is a general purpose "do it all" firearm. It's for humanely putting down farm/ranch animals, animals that have endured a vehicle strike, varmints, etc, etc. It is for when you need more than a handgun, and you have time to get to your long gun (preferably long in advance). Using the proper tool for the job always makes sense when you understand how and when the tool is to be used.
