Tach Hookup - FJ60 12H-T install

As you type, I am working on a direct plug in module that will sit between your In-Dash, OEM tach and the bell-housing sensor. NO CALIBRATION WILL BE NEEDED!!!. I didn't realize there was more interest!

Check if your bell-housing connector is the same as Integrin's 11/8/08 picture. If it's the same, then we are in business! If different, send me a picture PLEASE. I'll also want to know more details about your engine (12 or 24v) and year.

Also,
the big silver box is a PROTOTYPE. The finished unit should look more like a bulge in some heat shrink tubing on the harness! (no display). We certainly don't need the digital displays, I just did it because it was cool to me.

Also FOR EVERYONE. Please don't let that sensor wire just 'dangle' under the truck! Suspend it with some wire or tie-strap to the bell-housing so the wires don't fracture or break before I get you set up.

I am collecting tachs right now: All of the diesel/gas 40's & 60's. I am also asking people for the 80-series tachs (older and newer). If anyone can get me one, then I owe you a big favor.

Awesome!! I am 98% sure mine the bell housing connector is the same. I will check today and send a pic as soon as my account will let me if it is not. That is great work by the way. I was following most of it and appreciate the detailed research. I have a 12v 12H-T. Mid 80s I think. Tracking down the engine serial number just being slow about it. Thanks a million.

BitterSweet61, I don't need the engine serial number. I just want to know:
1) if your entire truck is wired for 12 or 24 volts.
2) If you have the same connector on the bellhousing as pictured previously.
Fwiw: Even if your connector is different, we could still connect my converter. I am considering trying to get a bunch of the mating sensor connectors to make this EASY! (Ie: Instead of splicing wires).

For those who care: I also inspected a rare 70-series with a 15-BT engine retrofit. It also had the same sensor & connector but on the opposite side of the bellhousing.

I have been really busy with the tach project! Several mudders have contacted off-list. I have now have 60/62, and early 80-series tachs working. I also have circuits for the 12HT, and GM Diesels. I am also getting the Small-block Chevy V8, Vortec V8, 1HD diesel hooked up to all these tachs.

The proto circuit is a little bigger than I hoped and I am still searching for the perfect little box to place it in.

I am going to some lab torture-testing and have the Austin locals test these in their rigs for a couple weeks to make sure they are bullet-proof.

This is the tach from a early 1991 FJ80 (3fe under the hood).


It doesn't hurt the tach to bring it well into the red-zone since it is sitting on my desk instead of having an engine begging to slow down.

I have Fj 60 that I swapped a 3B with a 5 speed trans with original bell housing tach sensor. I looked in to BJ60 wiring and it appears that you need to ground one of the wires off the tach sensor and connect the other wire to the FJ60 tach negative and that should work. I have not had chance to hook this up but if any of you got original a BJ60 electrical drawing, can you post it here where it shows the tach connection.

I have a FJ60 tach and your sensor and I have spent several months experimenting with them on a lab bench. Your proposed wiring will definitely NOT work. The 2 gauges only look the same at first glance...but they are completely different instruments. If you use the IH8MUD search feature, you will see your path has been a dead end for many others.

Updates: I now have all 12v 80-series tachs and one tach from my 1HD-FT (HDJ-81) diesel (thanks to buys from MUD members and my local salvage yard) .
The newest design is now about 1/2 the size of a pack of cigarettes. I am hoping to get the size further reduced so it can simply fit in the wiring harness as a 'bulge' using simple heat-shrink tubing!

can you post the part # on the larger IC chip on the BJ tach.

I like to find out what that thing is.

This Herb Peyerl guy is on the same track as me wrt to a signal conditioner. If you have more detailed contact information or a link to him I would really like to see where he is so I don't duplicate his efforts. Maybe I can collaborate with him....

Herb is a buddy of mine without a MUD account (I don't know why...) and he is definitely looking for some collaboration on this, specifically what Panoramic worked out as a solution.

It does matter which one is grounded. Unfortunately I cant tell you which off hand. There are only two ways - if one doesnt work then try the other. You cant break it by connecting it wrong.
