What is the best Synthetic Winch Rope to use on my 80, and should I go with the synthetic roller replacements or the slot type fairlead. I saw some used this past weekend and it looks like the way to go.
George, a lot of folks out here seem to be happy with the Amsteel blue but I thought I remember Brian Jowett (Bjowett) selling something else. I thought it was in the vendor or sale section but that's been a while, maybe pm him as it was a pretty good deal.
Hasn't anyone looked into rope used in fishiing and sailing, sourced out of marine supply houses? As I recall from my sailing days there were several sizes and strengths available in assorted colors and sold by the foot. West Marine in Oakland, CA often sold rope at heavily discounted prices and I'd imagine that others do as well.
Also, a question about these new roller replacements for use with rope: wasn't the problem in using rollers that the rope would get squeezed and jammed between rollers, in the corners? If so, why would these new rollers be any better?
From what I learned you do not want to use the roller type lead with syn rope for exactly the reason's stated. But rather a solid aluminum or syn fairlead...so that the rope cannot get pinched.
I just setup my winch with Synth. and a new fairlead. All the reasons stated above were relayed to me. It's called a Hawse fairlead - I got my stuff from rockstomper.com. They were great to deal with, and will probably get the rest of my recovery gear from them.
On a side note, the Hawse weighs like 4oz. and the roller fairlead feels like it's about 10lbs. (OK, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get the jist). Yeah, and the synth. line feels like it weighs a pound compared the weight of the wire cable.

I believe the synthetic winch rope was originally designed and taken from the marine industry so this may also work.
Like a few others I also got my Amsteel from Rockstomper and the service and price was very good. I got my hawse fairlead from FJ60.com at the same time I got my 80 OME lift. They were able to sourse me a hawse fairlead that was designed for the ARB bumper so the mounting holes are a little lower like how some people drill holes lower on their roller fairleads for the ARB bumpers. Although I'm not sure this is necessary.
