what would you guys recommend for a 8274. the winch is actually not a 8274 but and older one, i think its a 8270. which only had power out and in, no free spool. going to update it to the 74 style upper housing,9.5xp motor... this is going on my fj60 once i get the truck back on the road. thanks in advance.

About 100-125 feet of 3/8 line would be perfect.

That's what I did. The drum will hold 150' of 5/16" line, but I wanted heavier, and less turns on the drum (more pulling power without all the line out). I also carry another 50 or 75' of line extension just in case, but I've never used it.

Have you guys found a good price on thebsyn line? Best o found was 1.85 a foot on amsteel blue 3/8 from a online boating place.

What kind of mud discount do you offer? You can PM if you don't want to make the discount public.
I'd be interested in the offer as well..

too much line on the drum is problem keeping it tight and if not tight it gets puled into the lower layers and causes problems. Ouputshaft is right.

I've never had problems with too much synthetic line on a winch..

I agree with Mace. It isn't a problem unless you are sloppy re-spooling your winch. I always make sure my line is wrapped neatly on the drum and has some tension. Tension and no gaps on each layer will greatly extend the life of wire rope and synthetic rope.

I prefer one good pull instead of multiple pulls if possible. If you are straining your winch to the point of bogging it out you need to invest in a snatch block. Overheating your winch motor and battery will kill both quickly. I don't worry about what layer I am on until I start to see the last layer. I do have extensions just in case but have rarely needed to use them.

I put 150' of 7/16" Amsteel Blue on my 8274. I have the XP 6hp motor and +76mm drum, no problems, I almost always use a snatch block. I also carry a second 150' length of 7/16" for an extension when needed.

To spool the cable on to the drum, I use the winch to pull the truck up a slight incline (I heard the correct tension for loading the cable is 10% of the cable workling load limit).

Once a year I take the cable off and chuck it in the washing machine for maintenance.

I took a a recover class from a legitimate expert. He likes as much line as will fit. That being said I went with 100' of 3/8 Amsteel from Southeastern Off road. The extensions are about the same price as a longer line. I like having room to spool it sloppy. Two thumbs up for southeastern Off road. Very nice product and best price around. Plus they support the community.
