did the OC, i required 7 qts, is that normal for the 2UZ-FE? i remember someone mentioning closer to 8 qts.

also, whats the best place to buy Mobil 1 5w-30? i found the 4 qt containers at advance auto parts for $19.88+ tax.

7.2 quarts
Mobil 1 5w-30 can be found almost everywhere even WalMart carries it.

just wondering where i can find it the cheapest, i havent checked sams club or costco yet.

Cheapest will be at Walmart in the 5 quart containers for about $25, or Costco where a 6 pack will run you about $30.

thanks cary. btw, heard you were in the market for a USED yamaha rx-z1?

I'm with Cary on this. The last car we bought new, our 2004 Sienna, the oil got changed to Mobil1 at 1000 miles. It's at 40,000 now with 5k changes, and does not burn a drop between changes. I'm sure it could go longer, but 5k is an interval I can remember.

Just remember, it is more important to have an interval and change it on time, than to have no interval at all, where it may go a long time between changes.

I leased a Sienna, fresh dino every 7500. At the two-year point I opened the drain and lumps of bad-smelling oil came out, like burned tar. Filled it with dino, turned it in, got the wife an 80. I'd especially fill a new vehicle with synth, it's too valuable to be putting in dino.

Not me. I gave up motorcycles 20 years ago. I rode motocross and trials, now I ride mountain bikes.

The Sienna had the sludgemonster engine, it was a known problem and not typical.

I thought there were similar problems with a growing number of engines? Hotter engines are more efficient, I've heard that's the problem for oils: engines are getting hotter.

It's not the engine runs hotter, is appears to be one or both of the following:

1) Poor crankcase ventilation, and/or
2) Significant temperature changes throughout the engine, especially from the head to the block.

In cases with marginal engines like the toyota 4 and 6 cyl sludge prone engines and the VW 1.8 engines, running a quality synthetic will never harm anything. Without knowing ahead of time what engines may have sludging issues, it is always a safe alternative to go with a quality synthetic.

This is great stuff. I purchased an '04 100-series about 3 months ago with 40k miles to replace my '95 80-series. I'm assuming it's had dino oil from the start. I want to switch to synthetic. Anything I need to be concerned about other than just doing it?

Thanks!

is it just me or does an engine run smoother and quieter with syn oil?

It's not just you! A lot of people imagine that that their engines run better and smoother after spending a little money for better stuff. :D

Synthetic oil is great stuff and I use it myself but I doubt that it is perceptible to the driver.

If anyone has done a blind study I would love to see it.
