I’ve been contemplating build a swing out carrier for my spare. The one option out there that mounts on the door doesn’t really appeal to me, too much weight on the door. My design has the base mounting to the frame and the carrier would swing out in unison with the door. What do you guys think? Would it sell?

Somewhere, a week ago or so I just saw a guy build one that was attached to the frame behind his rear bumper. It came out nice and clean.

That’s what I was going to do

The Prado 150 on Toyoto's Australia site shows the option for the tire mounted on the door. Is the US door different? If not, it would suggest the door is designed to carry some weight.

Start on post 7 for this guys DIY carrier based off a Jeep JK kit.

I was contemplating doing something like this, kind of the way the 80 series guys do a tire carrier with the stock bumper. Here: Swing-out tire carrier options for a stock bumper?

Thanks jmanscotch!! That's the post I was referring to but couldn't fine it!
Nice job tracking it down! 👍

What about something like this:

No affiliation, thought it would be cool for my sportsmobile.

That’s exactly what I had in mind, I hate it when beats me to the punch. But it’s nice he documented it so it will be easier for me when I get to it! Thanks for finding that!

He did a good job.

Interesting setup that I hadn't seen yet.

they have some pretty cool setup. But I can't really tell if the lower part of the hitch is elevated enough that it'll prevent our barn door style from opening.

Just watched the entire video! What Swiss Army Knife!
The only thing one should keep in mind is not to put a cook stove on the prep-table with gas roto jugs underneath!
If I didn't already have my MetalTech rear bumper, that would be a great option! But like you mentioned, not sure if the barn door will clear the top of the brace. :meh:

Swiss Army Knife is the perfect description! Interesting design.

Pretty neat product, he definitely thought of a lot of different uses and accessories with the design. Two issues, I am willing to bet that it doesn't clear the bottom of the barn door on the GX and I don't like the strap for your spare. The strap makes it way too easy for someone to steal your spare in a matter of seconds. $1770 isn't a terrible price when you consider what all you are getting but I need a permanent option for my spare and that simply doesn't provide that. I am looking forward to hearing some feedback from those who purchase one as it is a neat option.
