Hello from BC Canada! I too am considering a turbo for my 97 LX, I have seen and emailed turbo glide as another poster has above, and have been wondering about the differences in performance and quality between the safari system that we hear about and the AVO sold by Slee among others? Also am trying to keep up with the landtank option as his unique and insightful approaches make sense to me. Any thoughts? Insight?

Cheers Peter (raw newbie)

cant you still run 87 octane and possibly gain 2mpg with same normal driving at 5psi or so? (how much HP would that add you, 50 or so?)

i would love to buy a turbo, but dont want to spend more than $3,000 S/C would be cool too but im not looking forward to using 91 octane all the time

also being in CA, would i have issues with passing smog, or do they have CARB legal turbo kits?

Could some field the octane question?

I have been learning about turbos for just about one month, and don't remember reading about ocatane requirements.

I've always run whatever was the highest octane available. Some will argue that's not necessary but with the high compression and high heat environment inside the combustion chamber, I won't take the chance of predetonation. HTH.

Got a question that is on the tuning of these 2 things, (SC and TC).

What electronic changes need to be made, if any, to the fuel maps, timing, fuel injector sizing, o2 sensors.......

No one has mentioned these things. How does someone make power if they haven't had the ECU flashed (tuned) to the changes in the engine? Is a stand-alone system used or piggy-backed into the factory harness?

Just very curious

^For the S/C noe of these changes are usually needed. Many clean/balance their OEM injectors but that's usually it besides cooling system maintenance etc. It's virtually a bolt on mod unless you add a custom intercooler.

What an "age old" debate. As far as availability for the 80 it seems fairly simple.

If you're a bolt on guy with extra $$$ go with the S/C. If you have some ingenuity and like to tinker, a DIY turbo will be more rewarding. Just my opinion of course.

Thanks Nicholas on the S/C side. Anyone with the Turbo side?? I found a great single piece manifold
here

eBay Motors: Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus LX450 4.5 24 Valve Turbo Man (item 400012027330 end time Mar-24-09 15:16:49 PDT)

and was looking to go this route, possibly put together a kit for under a S/C price, and develop it for MUD and RS folks. Just need some tuning knowledge for best balance of power/economy. Any positive direction will really help.

Thanks

There was a manifold that looked exactly like this for sale in the MUD classified section a while back. I doubt anyone has bought it yet.

Supposedly a two piece manifold is more desirable due to heat expansion, but this is another can of worms.

If you have the $$$, time, resources, and second vehicle to drive during the build I'd say go for the turbo. It sounds pretty expensive if you don't get it right the first time, but there are a lot of really smart guys on here that might be willing to help you trouble shoot.
