A friend just purchased an 80 series because "he has always wanted a 80 series." His wife has a 2003 100. He now says he cannot stand the 80 as his everyday driver because here in rural Georgia he is unable to pass trucks, etc. on the backroads. My question is- if money is not an object would a supercharger solve this problem? I told him to just go buy another 100 but he insists he wants to make this his "perfect truck." We thought about a v8 swap, but I feel the supercharger would be an easier task if it will give him the performance he is looking for. I did a search and did not find the answer I am looking for even though I feel this has been pounded as a thread before. Thanks in advance.

If you read some of the recent posts, you'll see a lot of talk about superchargers and turbos on the 80. He will notice a huge difference and if he lifts the truck to run bigger tires, he'll likely want to eventually regear with 4.56 or 4.88

He has an 80, but does it have the underendowed 3fe or the 1FZ-FE? You didn't state what year his truck was.

BTW, in my above post, when referring to the blower and the turbo, I was assuming he had the FZJ80 and not the FJ80.

I have a 94 with a S/C and I can't still appreciate it due to slight detonation (pinging). I ordered a Unichip today and have an appointment to have it dynoed and programmed next week at a Porsche shop which happens to be a Unichip dealer. My main reason for going Unichip is to maximize the life of my engine by having it run at it's peak, some people disagree but in this case I'm going with the Australian experience which to me when it comes to Landcruisers is like second to none. Crossing my fingers. By the way the price for the chip, installation, dyno and programming is $690 here in Norcal.

Please keep us informed on how it goes, if it works well for $690, the porsche shop may become a porsche, and cruiser tuning shop :D

And if money is no object, go the turbo, he will looooooooooooovvvvveeee overtaking when that is fitted

I will let you know what happens, thanks again Darren!!

Have your buddy wait a couple of months. Man-A-Fre is working out the kinks on a new intercooled turbo system that sounds like it will be great. It will be around $5500 installed, or about $4500 as a kit, but will not have the detonation issues of a supercharger and will definitely provide more power. It will be similar to the Safari turbo, but more up-to-date in terms of components. I learned this info through a recent email with a Man-A-Fre sales rep.

Have your friend check out the magasine reviews at the bottom of this page. I think it will sound pretty attractive:

The Safari turbo is no longer available ;(

John

.... and if you wait for Man-A-NothingisFree, you may wait a long time and still never see it finished.

Will the MAF Turbo kit include any enhancements the exhaust system, or is that going to be left up to the customer to fiigure out?

My suggestion would be go turbo but I definately agree with Junk when it comes to MAF. It ain't free and will take forever and probably never come to fruition anyway. Go Safari, its an awesome system and is basically bullet-proof when properly installed.

Go Safari ?? Where will you get a new Turbo. Minimum order 25 units and no production !! Forget it. You can't get them anymore. So only Superchargers left. Or will we get 25 people together for the Safari Turbo ???? :D

CJ, I've spoken quite a bit with MAF about this and they will most likely offer a 3" cat back with it. They see a lot of their market for this in CA and there's a C.A.R.B. (Ca Air Resources Board) regulation they want to comply with so leaving the stock cats will be something they'll strive to do. However, if you look at your front cat/O2 sensor and how that connects up to your exhaust manifold/down pipes (at least in 95-97) it's not straightforward to just get that all plumbed in using bolt on components. They had a short connector downpipe for the Safari system. What I've been able to find out that was pretty much a propriety piece for the US market since we were the only ones with cats. The used one I got from AUS came with the exhaust but it's nothing but straight 3" pipe from the turbo manifold outlet right back to the muffler (stock location). No doubt that'd be fun to have on but not really legal since I live in CA.

I'm leaning with others on opinions about availability and when and if it'll ever be offered. Don't hold your breath.

My take on the original focus of the thread though is tell your bud to just get a different vehicle to daily drive or be happy with what the 80 is. The 80, even with a bunch of $$$ mods to the engine and drive train just isn't going to be rally car, street demon, etc. that you could have for a lot less money and effort in a different vehicle. By the same token, a lot of those will never offer the off-road capability, safety, security, reliability, etc. that an 80 will. I've approached this truck like a swiss army knife. It'll do most of what I want really, really well but I'll never hang with a Porsche (ok, maybe a 914) or a WRX and it'll never rock crawl as good as a mini and it'll never get the fuel economy of a Prius and it'll never be as good as a minivan for GP people/kid hauling. BUT it can do all of that, except get good fuel economy, better than anything else I've found. Sorry for the rant but it seems like folks get passed by a couple of yahoos with big-A$$ fords/chevys/etc that absolutely do only that pretty well and they're griping about being underpowered. You have the let that go on with a smile on your face - life's an endurance event not a sprint. Sorry for the rant, just my opinion on the matter.

I totally agree, I do not care if my truck is slow. It does everything I want, yea it is no speed demon or a great pull vehicular but I did not buy it for that. It is a great all around vehicle and will go most places I want off road. It's easy to drive/park and gets relatively decent gas mileage. I love driving in the slow lane now, I get to the same signal as the speed demon but I arrive less stressed. Driving a Landcruiser is like meditation it should relax you.

Some counterpoints:

1. I never get passed by big-a$$ fords/chevys/etc. !

2. Yes, life is an endurance event, but with as many sprint events within it as you want!

3. Work hard, play hard, live life fully, live life fun. Turbo equals full out fun!

4. Photoman will probably work out an off the shelf turbo system before MAF will!!!

Cheers! ( Hey, how do y'all get your cheers, and smileys and such, I have not fingered that out yet. Thanks )

Turbo, I think you need to make a trip out here to CA. You'll not want to put that chip so far out or so high on your shoulder - there will always be someone faster. A lot of folks out here don't diffuse their focus on building up their trucks with details about how it will flex, off-road, comfort, etc. - just speed and the size of tire that'll fit under it. Bored over, turbo'd, NOS big-block v-8s running 40"+ tires are pretty common and believe me there's not much brainpower behind the wheel. Just for good measure you've got WRX's with ~500hp, a bunch of twin-turbo Supras, Mitsus, Acuras, etc. not able to differentiate between reality and Fast/Furious video games/movies.

Sheeshlouise, I have no chip on my shoulder, I just love speed, in fact, I love it when someone smokes me, its like "wow, what is under that thing?", in fact, when I was passed like that in the past (not in my 80), if I saw the person later, I would always be like, " wow man, show me that thing, it rocks "! Its not about always winning, its about always enjoying what you enjoy. I never push things past safety, and I never push things past pride. If I lose, as long as I lose well, well then, more power to me. Besides, I've met some super cool people after losing a little strip session or a few furious twists up mountain passes (again, not in my 80). Truth be told, I rarely race this thing; no matter how much power it has, it is not a sportscar and I am not foolish enough to think so. Also truth be told, sure, there are all sorts of domestic big rigs that can kick my ass, s***, you can order a crate motor of any variety, any size, and drop it into virtually any big-a$$ whatever like you mentioned and it would beat my rig with more speed, more power, and less money. Give me a break, I'm not aggressive at all about this, I'm just having fun. Peace.
