Any suggestions for amount of drop for a ballmount for general towing ( rental equipment, utility trailer, etc). I don't own a trailer or I would buy one specific to it.

97, factory hitch, stock height, tires, etc.

TIA,
tony

(I did a search on "ballmount and ball mount and no results, plus I've been looking at the towing posts...)

Wouldn't use a straight one. I think mine is about one or two inches. Fairly standard.

Or would the qustion be, What is a good height from the top of the ball to the ground, for general towing as you describe. That way you could get the appropiate drop for a vehicle based on lift.

It all depends on what you're towing...basically how much tongue weight you'll have. Generally you want whatever you are towing to be level, and your truck to be level as well. For general purposes though a 2 inch would probably be fine. Realize that if you're towing something that really sags your rear, you can always turn it upside down and flip the ball to gain tow height.

Agree with Safado regarding level ride, etc. etc.

I have heard, however, if you invert (turn it upside down) the drop hitch it is weaker in that position. Something to keep in mind. I do know that when I had the weight dist. hitch installed, the guy explained that he was trying to set the ball in a position that would have the trailer level.

been told at a trailer rental place that 18" was standard.
I got a 3" drop which was perfect for the utility trailer I bought (with car-size tires).
E
added: now that I modified the trailer for off-roading I need a 6" drop to be set inverted...
(or a 9" lift... :-) )

You want the trailer to be slightly sloped down to the vehicle. This way when you apply the brakes it will want to press down on the ball. The other way it will want to pop off of it.

Interesting point.
