This is kind of chat kind of tech......so here it goes. Oh yes, there are no pictures due to the shame I just went through.

I took the beast (fzj80) out today with a friend who was in his stock suzuki samarai (?) We went out to some big ass dirt field that had all the dirt pushed up into piles and whatnot. Anyway, I was thinking that his little stock (oh does have rear locker) piece of poo would get stuck and the 80 would school him..........well, first hill/ditch I went into, I got stuck! I put her in low, and locked the lockers thinking I am good to go..........but no. Locker lights just kept blinking and blinking and blinking etc etc etc. I pissed now:mad: Soo, I wish I would have taken a picture but like I said, its to shameful to even snap a shot of. The little stock piece of poo actually backed up, and pulled me out with a tow rope. Yes thats right, that little 2 thousand pound, 500.00 doller special piece of crap did it!!!

Anyway, after a few more minutes, I the dumb ass, high center the beast................GREAT!!!!!!!! Now, that little piece of poo is at it again....pulling me out once more!! At this point, I am red from embarrasment.................

Long story short, after about 20 minutes it finally hit me why the lockers would not work....................Duh, I did the 7 pin mod and I needed to push in the center diff button!!! It slipped my mind due to I have my Ipod covering the button up and like that old saying goes "out of sight out of mind!" Well, I finally locked it up, went back and did the first hill I got stuck at, twice just to make sure my friend knew the beast could do it.;)

Point of this story so its kind of tech...............remember to use lockers correctly, and remember to push in your center diff button if you have the 7 pin mod done. Oh yes, I found out that 315's will rip your fender flare off at full compression even with a four inch lift and drop brackets and 1.5 wheel spacers!!!:frown:

I am off to go and weep for a while!!!!!

Those are the stories that make for better drivers in the long run :D

It isn't the lift or the lockers or any of that stuff...it's the really stupid sh$t that you learn from and who cares what pulls you out?

Don't knock the Sammies...little tiny solid axle rigs can get out there...

Samurais do very well offroad. It's on the freeway where they suck ;).

I have learned my lesson thats for sure. Those little bastards kick ass.......in the dirt that is. I have no idea how they do on the road but, damn, I am still in shock.

Man, that hurts. But you're a better man now for facing up to your shame! :)

Reminds me of a tech term used in the IT world. ESO- Equipment Superior to Operator. :D

You have brought shame upon our family, may the fleas of thousand camels infest your body!

Man, I know that had to be embarrassing. When you got your lockers engaged you should have done that hill in reverse. Oh well............

Fixed it for ya.

Avoid running with the zukes in the 80. In mud and tight trails you will lose big and pay in body damage.

The 80 is way to big and heavy to compare to a zuke on the trail.

What a great story! Good lesson there, and yet still fun, had a good run, minus the flare I guess...:bounce:

As you learned don't ever underestimate a Sammi on the trail. They are very light and will go anywhere until you hang them up.

If it makes you feel any better the first time I wheeled my 60 I got stuck in a huge mud pit and blew out my clutch slave while doing some trail maintenance. Got pulled out by a Sammi. I do own a Sammi and plan on building it for trail use. Don't get me wrong I love my cruisers but the idea of not having to worry about beating up a rig sound like a lot of fun to me.

so you're saying the 80 and Sammi are twins :grinpimp:

Thanks for all the replies.................I feel much much much better now! I just went outside and had a talk with the beast, and I asked her why she had to let me down like that. With her smooth style and bold looks, I knew it wasnt her fault, but mine. I should have known that she (the cruiser) was having a bad day because she was low on fuel and had a bad smell of rotten food (thanks to my four year old daughter) stinking up the inside. Next time I know to fill her up with fuel and perhaps clean her out. Perhaps then she will enlighten me as to where and when to push that center diff button.:frown:

could have been worse, you could have been pulled out by a Heep...!

Yeah, just like Arnold and DeVito.

You are not alone with stories like that. About a year ago I was out testing my freshly installed ARB lockers- felt like I was invincible and able to climb anything. Little did I know that with great traction power comes a great need for a few brain cells-which I had a lacking of that particular day. Anyways I was approching my first real test this big rock thinking "No problem let me just hit the buttons and I'll climb right over" but to my dismay nothing happened.:crybaby: I stood there fuming with anger:mad: at my 80 and staring at my spooter as he yelled at me "Go left!!! Go left!!!". I must have reved my poor 80 nearly redling it for almot a minute. After what seems like an eternity thinking to myself "damm ARB's they don't work for crap", my spotter yells "Do you have it in 4 low??!!!!!" I look down and to my complete shock I had not engaged the transfer case into 4 low:eek:. I had just put the poor 80 through all this crap for nothing. After discovering my noobie mistake I calmed down and engaged the transfer case into 4 low, slowly tapping the gas with lockers engaged the 80 climbed up and over with ease. What an idiot I thought, I will never make that mistake again. I've gone on over twenty wheelin trips since then and everytime I engage the lockers I instinctivy look if I have the transfer case in 4 low. Leason learned.

Wouldn't the free flare removal be from the 1.5" spacers? So maybe the use of wheel spacers should be reconsidered and/or maybe only a 1" used?

You know, the fender flare being ripped off was actually nothing compared to the sammi skoolling me in the dirt. I would take all fenders being torn off anytime rather than sitting there watching the beast be pulled out by a little sammi. Its all good now though, I actually have major respect for those things now. They really can champ it out in the dirt.

Not as small as a sami, but....

I can echo some of what the SAMI can do..... I own a 1985 4Runner, which is bigger than a Sami... but have pulled out a number of full size chevys, and an FJ-40 with a 350 conversion. Light weight + good tires + front and rear e-lockers = go many places... and pull fools out of the mud.

Really, though, the secret is to only push your vehicle to places you know you can get yourself out of. Keeps me safe :)

Sorry about your experience. I've owned a modifed Sammi and knows what it can do in mud wheeling. Were you using mud terrain tires?
