strong gas smell when starting in extreme cold

i have a strong gas smell from the exhaust at cold startup. It lasts a short time and goes away once things heat up a bit. My truck recently passed smog easily.
I had assumed it was because the cats are cold and the engine is dumping more gas in the engine w/ cold. I think it's normal though I will check the hose under the intake

I've got the same issue, maybe it is a Colorado thing....ha. The fact that it goes away relatively quickly has not concerned me. I figured that it had to do with the sensors over compensating for the cold temps.

I love this site....I was curious about this issue and the fact that others have had the same issue qwells my fears.

I garage mine here in WI and seem to get the same issue when it is 10*F or colder. Is anyone's exhaust white rather than grayish? Mine seems to be more on the white side for the first 15 seconds then goes to the normal "go green-hater" exhaust these bad boys put out.

I live in Durango, gotta say, have the same issue. Well, not sure if it's even an issue. My truck has no codes, and runs great. It does have 185k, so maybe we can narrow down to tired cats or something, I'm sure this didn't happen when they brought them home to Durango, Brek, or wherever in 94, 95, or 97.

thanks everyone for the replies! I am going to leave it be for now. If it gets worse or the truck starts to run rough, I'll revisit it.

Mine definitely was spewing white smoke when it was real cold a couple of mornings this past week.

I've heard that the white smoke is just moisture from the valves. My 94 does sometimes have a hint of gas smell from the exhaust and the white smoke at cold start up. Everything else runs normal with state emissions tests and no loss of coolant. I wouldn't be concerned with the smoke unless you are losing coolant.

So is the heavy smell in the cold at cold start up as simple as the cat bed isn't operational until up to temp?

1997 FZJ80, burning no coolant, only smells at cold start up.

My 96 smells pretty rich on startup, I live at altitude. I don’t think it’s related, but has p0401 code, and charcoal canister is clogged.
