Hi,

While reassembling knuckles following a full front-end rebuild I just noticed that 6 of the 8 threaded holes on the face of the RH knuckle are stripped. I'm guessing someone used an impact driver instead of a torque wrench... If I can't find a replacement part quick enough I'm considering having the holes rebored, tapped and helicoils inserted but I'm worried there isn't enough material on the periphery of the knuckle. Any thoughts or experience doing this kind of job on this particular part (43211-60090)?

1991 PZJ77

Thanks!

I wouldn’t, they are a critical component. New knuckles are fairly cheap, $300-ish for a pair.

You may also want to check brake caliper mounting holes, those strip out too.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback! My feeling too... I'm leaving next week on a 5000km trip and wouldn't want to risk it.

Any suggestions of a North-American vendor who might have these stock a able to ship them fast?

Thanks again,

Hey Tohox,

I am guessing you are pressed for time, I would just replace the whole thing, you can even find good condition used parts for it. I don't suppose you can "rescue" the existing threads? If you choose to repair with heli's, I would only use it as a temporary measure until you can replace...

Yes, I'm leaving next week (heading your way actually!). Threads aren't salvageable. I can't even get near the suggest torque spec without the bolts skipping a thread. If you know of anyone who might have the parts in stock let me know.

Thanks!

Where are you located? I would try giving Dan @ 4wheelauto ((780) 468-2570) a call, he would likely have what you need, he may even have it in used to save you some $$$

@tohox hey I have used set, I am in California, PM me if you don't find it elsewhere

Leaving next Sunday for a month long cross country trek with my two oldest kids.

Thanks to @Loober who sent me his used knuckles in record time! After a bit of rust removal and paint they are now on the truck and looking fine.

I'm now reinstalling the brake callipers which I had taken off last winter for a rebuild and am wondering if there were/weren't lock washers on the two bolts which mount each caliper to the knuckle ears (90101-12144)? The FSM only mentions bolts, no washers so I'm tempted to put them on as is.

Thanks to all who pitched in!

Turns out there are two small brackets that go under the bolt heads (47786 and 47787 in the picture below) which serve to reinforce the edge of the disk brake dust cover. They appear to also act as a washer.
