Hi everyone, I have a strange thing happening to my 2000 Land Cruiser:
right after I start there is this strange sound that comes from the front left (either front cabin or engine compartment, haven't figured that out exactly) It goes on for max a minute and stops right after I drive off I have not tried if it stops when revving in neutral but that might be a good test)
It kinda sounds like a static radio going on and off and it is definitely something new that did not use to happen.
I have a recording but it seems like we can't upload sound or videofiles?

I hope you guys can figure this one out and tell me if I should worry.
Thanks!

Does it sound like a whistling noise - like a turbo spooling up?
Does it match the RPMs?
Does it do it only when cold? Every startup?

Maybe it is the brake booster pump. My brake boosster pump runs for about 30 seconds or so after starting the car, and then it kicks on periodically, when the brakes are applied, to maintain the pressure in the brake system. Mine is pretty quiet, but you can hear it if you are listening. It sounds kind of like radio static. I imagine it may get louder if there is a problem with the pump or, more likely, the little electric motor that drives the pump.

Is the sound coming from the gold-colored cylinder-shaped motor attached to the brake system? It is in the engine compartment on the driver's side right in front of the firewall.

Thanks for the responses sofar!
It sounds like a static radio like marshotel mentions. I wish I could upload a soundfile but imagine a static radio going on for a sec then off, on for a sec then off etc.
I will check if it is where you mention when I get off work!

I sure hope not as this actually started when the manifold was fixed.. but well since this started around that time you are making me a tad worried

It's most probably the exhaust, get under the truck and check catalytic converter heat shields and flex joints. Or maybe the manifold wasn't fixed correctly.
I would take it back to where it was fixed if I were you.

Maybe a pulley bearing going bad. Can you try to pin point a little more where it is coming from in the engine bay?

well I opened the hood t this morning and I hear nothing in the engine bay. m wife however, who was in the cabin, did hear the sound and says it's coming from the left of the steering column. any idea what's there that can make a sound like this?

any idea how to check that and is that dangerous? (anything to do with brakes seems like a big deal to me)
