hi everyone, since I bought my truck in 2019 I have always noticed the same problem, despite the various interventions and the engine refurbishment it has not been solved, it is not an impeding problem in daily use, but it is enough bothersome. I changed all the pipes, the pump diaphragm, the filter, I cleaned the tank, I never cleaned the injectors but I don't think they are the ones. The problem is, when you go up mountains, so in 2x4w the truck really loses a lot of power. Maybe you start the climb on the road and you're around 60-70kmh and as soon as you take the slope it dies, at the most you go to 30-40 pulling the 3rd gear full throttle... even on the road it's a bit dull... more ' of 90 kmh does not make them. The engine has been redone, I have no leaks, the exhaust has no holes (at least it doesn't seem to have any)... in every season and at every temperature, the diesel comes back in less than 8 hours of downtime. for example... I get dressed.. I go downstairs.. I go to start the car, insert the key and turn around.. the scooter makes many revolutions before starting the car (the glow plugs are new) and then it starts. .. in winter everything is amplified, first you give it a few laps, then you remove the key and give it back and the truck could even shut down before leaving regularly! I've already installed a non-return pre-filter, but nothing changes. Any advice? I thank you in advance, I don't know what to do anymore honestly!

Hi
What engine do you have?
At least a diesel, I assume.

The engine needs fuel, air and compression, in right balance and timing, to run.

Check the air filter and also air inlet and pipes to manifold. (Stupid, but not the 1st intake probably clogged by a bees nest or leafes).

You don't report any sputtering, so it's not likely air bubbles in the fuel line.

Could be false air, though:
Run it stationery, moderately reved up that manual knob. Make sure it runs constant revs.
Gentely spray some brake cleaner to any joint and gasket in the air intake line.
Stay clear from any regular air intake opening.
One by one; slowly.
If false air enters somewhere, the brake ckeaner would cause the engine to suddently rev up and then come down again.

The engine manual has pretty good procedures to check injection pump and engine on this to be in spec:
- Fuel pressure test at injectors.
- Fuel volume.
- Compression test on the engine (although rebuild)

You report quite sever starting issues. That's not normal. If all components have been thoroughly been rebuild and properly installed, as you say, it could only be poor settings.
Go over all settings and check.
Proper engine setting may require experience and knowledge. So, maybe this is the end of DIY. Probably time to find an expert.
(I couldn't do an engine setting myself either).

Good Luck
Ralf

PS: If you have a 3B and need manuals: PM me.

Hi Felde, thank you for your reply. Tomorrow, as soon as I get back from work, I'll try to do that test. Yes the engine is good and old 3B diesel. Obviously I didn't rebuild the engine and it was rectified and reassembled by competent people who, however, not being firemen, left the fuel pump and injectors as they were. Unfortunately in my area I don't have any valid pompists, I only have loudmouths who would tell me to throw it away. If you can pass me the manual of the 3b I would be very grateful. In any case, I tell you that it does not emit black or white smoke (now some white smoke yes, but of condensation, there is also the cold to take into consideration) while driving, the revs seem regular to me, mine has the dial with only the odometer so I rely on my ear and it doesn't dance at idle, just as soon as it is turned on it is a little low then it stabilizes.

forget the answer above, the application automatically translates it into Italian for me

It sounds like you may have a couple different issues.
I would check your fuel lines from the tank to the water separator, take the water separator apart and clean it, then from there to the filter ( new filter ).
Next i would get your injection pump timing checked ( there should be marks on the pump case to line up to get it close ).
Then i would go after the glow plug power and check that there is power, if no power then install a manual switch (wilson switch).
1 - diesel lines, filter and water separator
2 - engine diesel pump timing
3 - glow plug power

your dash looks different from mine what engine is it, 3b or VM italy motor?
from your video of it starting the glow sounds like its not working, do you have a thumb knob throttle on the dash to control revs on startup?

il tuo cruscotto sembra diverso dal mio che motore è, motore 3b o VM italy?
dal tuo video in cui si avvia il bagliore sembra che non funzioni, hai una manopola dell'acceleratore sul cruscotto per controllare i giri all'avvio?
hi, the engine is a 3b and the glow plug are working. Yes, i have the knob at the bottom right to control the revs. In the water separator ( behind the fender left rear side looking at the car from the front, right? ) what exctly should i remove besides the white little filter?

its just good to clean it out of dirt and rule it out as a source of clogging
It fills with mud and sludge and terrible stuff

did they disasemble the front timing case and gears when rebuilding it?

Could the timing gears be out a tooth?
Im totally just guessing here as ive never taken that apart on mine

Sorry for the late reply.
The video to me sounds like 'not enough fuel'.
Could be due to issues on the Injection Pump itself, or timing.

But I also wonder on the behavior of your ignition. I can't clearly get it from the video, but does it actually refuse to kick in the starting process on the first try to turn the key?
I wonder if your EDIC and fuel cutoff works correctly.

To rule out the fuel pickup and fuellines, sedimenter and stuff you could pull the delivery tube right at the Injection Pump and feed it with a clear tube directly from a canister. The 3B of that age doesn't have a return line to the tank.
But only do that if there is any doubt on the fuel pickup.
(Be warned: To reconnect the fuel line you need to bleed it all the way from the tank. This can't be done with the priming pump. You need to pull trough some 3L of fuel with e.g. an oil pump or an oversized syringe).

don't no the 3b but the idle seems very slow/low like not enough air/fuel, should be revving a bit more. Does she feel happier when warmed up?

Seemed an awful long time to glow, I put a wilson switch and count to 16 sec -ish when cold start (not as cold as you). 11v glow plugs on a 2h.

Also strange, you had to kick twice to turn her over. So your glows maybe old.
The initial kick should be abrupt and definite. Good battery, good starter, good glows, good earths and connections.

My dad use to have a 1948 massey tractor, he would wrap it with a blanket and warm her up with a blow heater for 1/2hr on cold winter starts. It helped. Not that you want to be doing this away from home.:shy:

hope it helps, difficult from here
